On August 5 2026, it premiered in a preview on FX and Hulu, before becoming available for streaming on Disney+, The Shards, the screen adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis’s latest semi-autobiographical novel: “The Shards.”
The story takes us to a bygone era of Los Angeles, among exclusive locales, parties, and ever-darkening atmospheres. Here are the suggestive locations that form the backdrop to the series.
What it’s about
Set in Los Angeles in the 1980s, the series follows the lives of Bret (Igby Rigney), a teenager who dreams of becoming a writer, and his circle of friends: privileged youths who are in the final year of a private school and spend their days engaged in wild shopping sprees, pool parties, and all kinds of excesses. Their everyday routine is upended by the arrival at school of a new student as fascinating as he is mysterious, Robert Mallory (Homer Gere), whose presence aligns with the city’s serial killer known as The Fisher, who targets teenagers and kills them in a brutal manner.

The city plays a secondary role in the series, produced by Ryan Murphy, just as it does in Bret Easton Ellis’s novel: it’s not surprising that for The Shards‘ locations real corners of Los Angeles were preferred, in some cases adapted to evoke the city of the Eighties, rather than studio reconstructions or computer-generated imagery.
On screen it’s not hard to recognize the busy streets at all hours, the neon and the nightlife venues of LA, as well as its historic colleges, the luxurious private villas, its residential neighborhoods, and the ocean-view highways.
In molti scatti della serie tratta da “The Shards” di Bret Easton Ellis è chiaramente riconoscibile, per esempio, la Pacific Coast Highway: una delle strade più ikoniche che corre lungo la costa meridionale della California.
Il Westwood Village, un quartiere residenziale poco distante dalla UCLA, è stato trasformato nella serie in quello dove vivono Bret e gli amici: qui i villini unifamiliari in stile classico, con i viali curati e le auto di lusso parcheggiate davanti ai cancelli, sono rimasti ancora quelli degli Anni Ottanta e che tanto hanno contribuito allo stereotipo di lusso losangelino.
Le scene all’interno del college sarebbero girate in parte alla Buckley School di Sherman Oaks, la scuola realmente frequentata da Bret Easton Ellis. Non ci sono, però, conferme ufficiali in merito da parte della produzione che ha esplicitato, invece, tra le location di The Shards l’Occidental College di Eagle Rock, famoso per uno stile che richiama quello mediterraneo e per le colline circostanti con campetti sportivi riservati agli studenti.
Una delle scene più iconiche della serie, quella di una festa in piscina con numerosi invitati, è stata girata alla Maison du Soleil in Holmby Hills: una tenuta in stile regency risalente ai primi Anni Quaranta, progettata da uno dei più noti architetti di Hollywood e appartenuta a diversi personaggi famosi, tra cui lo scrittore Sidney Sheldon, prima di passare nelle mani della famiglia Azria di cui è attualmente proprietà (il nome ufficiale della dimora sarebbe, infatti, the Azria Estate).
Tra i luoghi dov’è stata girata la serie The Shards c’è anche la South Bay Galleria di Redondo Beach: un centro commerciale ben frequentato da locali e turisti che sullo schermo rappresenta la Sherman Oaks Galleria di San Fernando Valley, un mall molto in voga negli Anni Ottanta dove Bret e i suoi amici, come molti adolescenti dell’epoca, erano soliti passare il tempo libero.
