Europe hosts some of the world’s best ski resorts, but which ones are the most reliable when it comes to snow levels and functioning lifts? The answer is unveiled by a new ranking published by the British tour operator Inghams Ski, created from the Reliable Ski Score, the metric designed to measure whether a destination truly guarantees a ski vacation without unpleasant surprises.
Analysts started from 150 resorts among the most frequented and examined their performance over seven winter seasons, from 2017/18 to 2025/26, excluding the Covid years (2019/20 and 2020/21). At the top of Europe? There is a destination entirely Italian.
Pontedilegno-Tonale is Europe’s most reliable
With a score of 93.1 out of 100, the Pontedilegno-Tonale ski area proved to be Europe’s most reliable. Located between Lombardy and Trentino, at the foot of the Adamello-Presanella peaks, it connects the slopes of Ponte di Legno, Temù and Passo del Tonale up to the Presena Glacier. It is a highly varied zone, suitable for both those taking their first steps on skis and more experienced skiers.
The resort tops the ranking because it guarantees snowy pistes and operating lifts where unforeseen issues have always been remarkably rare, season after season. Additionally, there’s a much-loved traveler’s experience: on select dates during the season, the lifts open early thanks to the initiative “Alba in Quota” allowing skiers to descend the slopes as the sun rises over the mountains, before the official opening.
The most reliable ski resorts in Europe: 2026 ranking
While Italy takes the top spot, France dominates the ranking, occupying exactly half of the top 20. Austria follows with six resorts: together, the two countries represent 80% of the list.
In second place is Obertauern, considered the snowiest resort in Austria. Here the season can last from late November to May, and nearly all hotels are perched on the slopes, so you step out the door and start skiing. For music fans there’s a fun fact: in 1965 the Beatles filmed the snow scenes for the movie Help right here!
Completing the podium is Les Arcs, with about 200 kilometers of slopes that grow to over 400 thanks to the connection with La Plagne in the Paradiski area. The 3 Vallees, fourth, boast roughly 600 kilometers of pistes and earned a perfect score for snow availability because 85% of the area sits above 1,800 meters. The top five closes with Alpe d’Huez, offering the best of two worlds: about 300 sunny days per year and the Pic Blanc glacier, which at 3,300 meters helps keep the slopes snowy often well into late spring.
In the top 20 there are also two other Italian destinations. In 12th place we find Val Gardena, where beginners can rely on well-maintained training areas and on the wide, sunny slopes of the Alpe di Siusi, while those seeking more adrenaline can challenge themselves on the Saslong, the World Cup slope, or venture into the Sella Ronda. In 15th place is Livigno, one of the Alps’ best destinations for learning to ski or snowboard.
