The dunes catch fire, the rocks shift through richer hues, and even ancient ruins seem to glow with a different light at sunset. It is the magic of the golden hour (the hour of gold), capable of transforming the landscape in a single moment. A moment that captivates photographers and enthusiasts, but also those who, while traveling, simply seek evocative panoramas before which they can feel moved.
Where is the best place to watch the sunset? The travel agency Kuoni, together with meteorologist Jim Dale of British Weather Services, analyzed 165 world destinations, selecting the 20 with the most favorable conditions for a dream sunset. To do so, they considered factors such as cloud cover, precipitation, light pollution and artificial brightness, wind speed, and the average duration of sunset. In the ranking, desert landscapes dominate, while in Europe one country stands out in particular, boasting four locations on the list.
The best place in the world to admire the sunset
Claiming the top spot on the list is Wadi Rum, in Jordan, favored by low cloud cover and almost no rainfall. Known as the Valley of the Moon, it is a desert of red-hued sand, towering sandstone cliffs, canyons, and natural arches carved into the rock. During the golden hour, this landscape takes on even More intense shades: the mountains glow red and orange, while long shadows cross the dunes. A spectacle to be enjoyed without rushing, letting the light reveal a different detail with each moment.
Le mete europee da tenere d’occhio
Within the ranking, the first European destination we encounter is the Acropolis of Lindos, on Rhodes, at the tenth position: it rises 116 meters above sea level, offering a privileged vantage point to savor the golden light. Between ancient columns and fortified walls, the gaze embraces the sea and the white houses of the village below: with the sun low on the horizon, the stones warm to amber reflections and the landscape becomes even more evocative.
Greece secures four spots in the top 20: besides the Acropolis of Lindos, the list includes the city of Rhodes, Cape Sounion, and Navagio Beach (Shipwreck Beach) on Zakynthos. Three different settings, spanning historic architectures, sea-promontories, and tall cliffs that frame the turquoise water. Completing the European presence is Paphos, in Cyprus, which takes the sixteenth place.
