What if we told you there’s an alternative to Manhattan’s skyscrapers, to the lights of Times Square, and to the usual postcard routes of New York? We’re not far from NYC, and the new connection from Italy to Newark invites us to discover a New Jersey gem. Multicultural, creative, and full of energy, it’s the perfect place to uncover a different side of the United States, among neighborhoods that smell of international cuisine, giant murals, concerts, and parks that blush pink in spring. All without giving up the possibility of reaching the Big Apple.
To reach it now is easier: from May 27, 2027 United Airlines will inaugurate a direct link between Olbia and Newark with three weekly flights on the new route that brings Sardinia closer to the East Coast of America, opening to American visitors.
But what makes this city a destination to put on your wishlist? Much more than you might imagine. Here’s what to do and see in Newark.
What to see in Newark
Branch Brook Park
One of the most beautiful destinations in this corner of the United States is the Branch Brook Park, a gem for flower lovers, especially in spring when the cherries take center stage with 18 varieties and over 5,300 trees. The date to mark on the calendar? April, when the city celebrates the bloom with the Essex County Cherry Blossom Festival, featuring outdoor events, music, and activities for all ages. Do keep in mind that the new flight from Olbia will debut at the end of May: to witness the blossoms you will need to organize the trip with other connections.
Ironbound District
The Ironbound District neighborhood is full of discoveries because the American soul blends with the traditions of Portugal, Spain, and Brazil, giving life to an irresistible mix of restaurants, bakeries, bars, and small businesses that tell stories arriving from afar. What to taste? Certainly the grilled specialties, finishing with a sweet pastel de nata.
Newark Museum of Art
At the Newark Museum of Art you can move from American art to African and Asian collections, and even discover an extraordinary collection of Tibetan art. Among the most fascinating stops there’s also a consecrated Buddhist altar, in addition to the historic Ballantine House and the planetarium. And of course don’t miss street art—the murals are enormous canvases to discover.
What to do in Newark
If you’re seeking adrenaline, aim for the Prudential Center, the arena that hosts the hockey games of the New Jersey Devils, concerts by international artists, and live shows. Prefer a night of dance, theater, jazz, and comedy? The New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC) is one of the city’s main cultural hubs, with a calendar spanning genres and languages. For soccer enthusiasts, there’s the Sports Illustrated Stadium in nearby Harrison, home of the New York Red Bulls. Attending a Major League Soccer match is a great way to experience the energy of American sport, chants and tifos included.
Among the seasonal experiences to look out for is the Newark Winter Village at Mulberry Commons, with ice activities and spaces dedicated to fun.
The surroundings of Newark to discover
We don’t have to stay here; there are many opportunities, starting obviously with New York. Manhattan is easily reachable thanks to PATH and NJ Transit rail connections. You can devote yourself to the classic must-sees, from Central Park to the Brooklyn Bridge, passing by museums, rooftops, and iconic neighborhoods. Then return to Newark and continue discovering New Jersey.
If you’re craving a change of pace, head to Morristown and its surroundings. Here you can follow in the footsteps of George Washington in Revolutionary War sites, explore the town center between boutiques and restaurants, or reach Lake Hopatcong for a day outdoors.
Want to slow down? Between farms, gardens, and bucolic landscapes, Somerset County offers a noticeably calmer face of the East Coast. Explore the trails and natural spaces of Duke Farms, let Colonial Park’s roses win you over, and discover the small local communities. To visit the area’s most popular attractions, renting a car can be especially convenient.
Where it is located and how to reach it
Newark is located in New Jersey, on the East Coast of the United States, about 15 miles from Manhattan. Its location makes it an interesting base for exploring both the Big Apple and other parts of New Jersey, alternating the most famous sights with less-traveled itineraries.
Getting there from Italy will be even easier thanks to new direct flights to Newark Liberty International Airport. From May 27, 2027 United Airlines will connect Olbia to Newark with three weekly flights and, from May 28, also Catania to Newark with four weekly frequencies. A seasonal direct link from Bari, launched in 2026 and planned again for the summer of 2027, is added. Once you land, you can reach New York with rail connections and continue exploring Newark and its surroundings.
