Istanbul is the airport with the most direct flights: No. 1 in the rankings

After Europe’s busiest airports, we discover which ones let you travel the world without a stopover. With as many as 294 destinations reachable nonstop, Istanbul Airport takes the top spot in Europe among the most connected. The result is largely due to the hub role of Turkish Airlines, a carrier that also holds the Guinness World Record for serving the most countries by a single airline.

From the Turkish hub it is possible to fly directly to hundreds of destinations, ranging from major European cities to intercontinental destinations such as Mexico City and Sydney, but you can also fly directly to some of the planet’s most fascinating and distant places: from the tropical beaches of Mauritius, Maldives and Zanzibar to the treasures along the Silk Road like Samarqand, up to Asian metropolises such as Tokyo, Seoul and Bangkok.

Two Italian hubs are in the ranking

Italy can also count two airports among the most connected in Europe. In the ranking appear Rome Fiumicino and Milan Malpensa: the former takes the 5th place thanks to 230 destinations reachable with direct flights, while the Milanese airport sits at the 12th place, on par with Manchester, with 188 destinations served nonstop.

For Italian travelers, this is good news: a network ever more extended of direct connections makes it possible to reach many destinations without changing planes, making trips faster and often more convenient.

Behind the Istanbul airport, the Paris Charles de Gaulle and Amsterdam Schiphol airports are tied, both with 262 direct destinations, followed by the Frankfurt am Main Airport.
