There are cities where Christmas concentrates on a square, and others where it spills into streets, gardens, and even underground caves. What unites them are the wooden cottages, the unmistakable scents of winter specialties, and that urge to travel that arrives with the first festive lights sparkling through the night. But which are the best European Christmas markets in 2026?
European Best Destinations reveals it, publishing the new ranking of the 20 best Christmas markets based on the preferences expressed by 803,258 travelers from 179 countries. The result pairs timeless classics and new protagonists, with recognitions dedicated to illuminations, parades, and the most romantic atmospheres. In the top 10, moreover, a spectacular Italian market stands out.
The Best Christmas Market in Europe 2026
The first place in the standings goes to Craiova, in Romania, which collects more than 142,000 votes. A result that rewards an event grown over the years, occupying more than 280,000 square meters: indeed, among the largest Christmas markets in Europe.
The Craiova event draws inspiration from the The Nutcracker: the historic city center becomes a route through monumental toys, giant sweets, and luminous decorations, while the hand-painted chalets add an artisanal touch to the display. Among the attractions stand out the Ferris wheel, the skating rink, and the enchanting Santa’s Sleigh suspended high above. The experience extends to the dining, with a gastronomic offering that brings together flavors from Eastern Europe and nearby areas, from Romanian specialties to Georgian, Armenian, and Balkan influences. European Best Destinations thus also awards Craiova the title of Best European Christmas Capital.
For the 2026 season, dedicated to the “Kingdom of the Elves,” mark these dates: from November 13 to January 3, 2027, Craiova’s Christmas markets are the perfect opportunity for a fun break among lights, stalls, and memories to take home.
The Italian Christmas Market Awarded
Italy enters the ranking at sixth place with Govone and Asti, stars of the Magico Paese di Natale (Magical Christmas Country). A special formula inviting visitors to move between different places rather than staying at a single market. The setting is incredibly fairy-tale, and not by chance the festival earns the title of the most romantic Christmas Market in Europe.
In Asti, the heart of the event is Piazza Alfieri, where more than 150 wooden stalls dedicated to craftsmanship, gastronomy and street food welcome the curious. The entrance is free and no reservation is required. In Govone, instead, the route unfolds in the historic center and around the Royal Castle, with the charming market, live performances and several activities for families. Among the most anticipated events each year return the House of Santa Claus, the School of Elves, and Christmas at the Castle. The festival also involves San Damiano d’Asti with its living nativity, creating a very interesting itinerary that crosses the Langhe, Roero and Monferrato. The 2026 edition marks the 20th edition of the event, scheduled from November 14 to December 20, 2026.
The Complete Ranking
The 2026 ranking threads across Europe, from the Baltic capitals to German cities, then Piedmont and even the underground markets of the Netherlands. After Craiova, in second place we find Zurich, Switzerland, indicated as the most beautiful Christmas market in Europe. Its strength lies in variety: stalls across the central squares, Alpine specialties, craftwork and light shows allow for a path that is always different. The main openings run from November 19 to December 23, 2026, with some markets also opening on December 24.
In third place is Riga, Latvia, which stands out as the best destination in Europe for Christmas illuminations. Beside the stalls of Cathedral Square, among woolen goods, spiced pastries and carols, there are light installations in parks and along the canals. The dates not to miss? From November 27, 2026 to January 3, 2027.
Fourth is Wonderland Lisboa, the sunniest Christmas Market in Europe. It rises in the Parque Eduardo VII of Lisbon, with its Ferris wheel, rides, crafts and local specialties that compose a surprising village that opens from November 27, 2026 to January 3, 2027.
At fifth place there is Debrecen, in Hungary, where Advent focuses on local traditions, concerts and activities for families. Among the stalls you can taste the kürtőskalács, the characteristic cylindrical pastries, while the skating rink, recognized as the most beautiful in Europe at Christmas, adds another reason to linger. The official dates are from November 20 to December 23, 2026.
After the sixth place for Italy (Govone and Asti), we find Valkenburg, in the Netherlands, which pairs the title of the country’s best Christmas market with the most beautiful Christmas parade in Europe. Here shopping also takes place in the evocative and ancient marl caves, among decorated galleries and underground stalls. Christmas Town animates the city from November 13, 2026 to January 3, 2027, but the markets in the caves end on December 30.
Next comes eighth place Vienna, crowned as the most elegant Christmas market in Europe. The architecture of the Austrian capital frames the chalets, decorations and walks among the lights: the hub is Rathausplatz, in front of the City Hall, where the Christmas atmosphere blends with the attractions of the park. The market on the square runs from November 13 to December 26, 2026.
Ninth is Montbéliard, recognized as the home of France’s best Christmas market. The Lumières de Noël envelop the historic center with illuminated decorations, while the chalets tell stories of craftsmanship and gastronomy. In 2026 the event celebrates its 40th edition, scheduled from November 21 to December 24.
Closing the top 10 is the romantic Paris, and in particular La Villette and the Tuileries, where the charm of the stalls intertwines with monuments, lit storefronts and attractions for families. The event here runs from November 15, 2026 to January 3, 2027.
