Every autumn the natural world offers extraordinary displays, transforming forests, cities and valleys into palettes of red, orange and gold. The foliage is one of the phenomena most loved by travelers, who choose this season to stroll among vibrant colors, discover picturesque villages, and admire landscapes that look like paintings.
But what are the best destinations in the world to witness this spectacle? A study by IgluCruise analyzed 40 popular locations, evaluating the presence of broadleaf trees, hours of sunshine, available excursions and travelers’ interest, and produced the top 10. Among the ten selected places, there is only one European destination, but it isn’t Italy.
Québec City, the best place in the world for foliage
Capturing the top spot in IgluCruise’s ranking is Québec City, in Canada, a destination where autumn colors frame a historic center with European atmosphere.
The city’s lead was driven primarily by the density of trees, the number of bookable excursions, and the rise in online searches. The result confirms Canada’s charm in autumn, when the forests become an ideal destination for those who love walking in nature and photographing spectacular landscapes.
Wachau Valley, Europe’s most beautiful foliage
For those dreaming of admiring foliage without crossing the ocean, the destination to note is the Wachau Valley in Austria, which occupies the sixth position. It is the only European location present in the top 10, a recognition that makes this region an appealing stop for an autumn trip.
Located about an hour by train from Vienna, the valley is traversed by the Danube and stands out for its vineyards, historic villages, and hilly landscapes. In autumn, the leaves take on warm tones that alternate with the green of the crops and the blue of the river, offering viewpoints to admire even during a river cruise.
The Wachau is also recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. After a day spent among scenic trails and a stroll along the Danube, one can pause in traditional local taverns to savor the local cuisine and wines produced in the region.
The Top 10
The ranking as a whole includes mainly locations in the North America, with a strong presence of Canada and the United States, as well as two Japanese cities.
