When packing a suitcase for a vacation, you mainly think about how to organize clothes, shoes, and accessories to make the most of the available space. But there’s another aspect not to overlook: the care of the suitcase, especially its wheels, among the parts most exposed to bumps, dirt, and wear during a trip. For this reason, among travelers a small DIY trick that costs almost nothing is becoming increasingly popular: wrapping the suitcase wheels with adhesive tape before setting off.
A simple gesture that takes only a few minutes and can prove useful especially when you have to drag the luggage over difficult surfaces, such as asphalt, cobblestones, or uneven pavements. The tape, in fact, creates a kind of protective coating around the wheel, with several practical advantages.

The adhesive tape on suitcase wheels
One of the main reasons this luggage hack is recommended concerns noise. The hard plastic wheels can become particularly loud when rolling over rough surfaces, such as asphalt or cobblestones. The thin layer of adhesive tape acts somewhat like a tire, helping to absorb vibrations and to make moving it quieter.
But it’s not only a matter of convenience. The coating can also help protect the wheels from wear and dirt, limiting direct contact with small rocks, dust, and abrasive surfaces. During a trip, in fact, the wheels are continually subjected to rubbing and stresses, especially when moving to and from the airport.
Another possible advantage concerns grip. Some types of tape offer a surface more adherent than the wheel’s smooth plastic, and can thus improve rolling on certain floors. The result is a potentially more stable suitcase and less prone to small lateral slips.
The method is also extremely cheap and practical. If the tape wears out or peels off, it is enough to remove it and apply a new layer, without having to replace the wheel immediately.
Which tape to use
To put this travel hack into practice, however, not all tapes are equally suited. The most recommended choice is the cloth-backed adhesive tape, particularly sturdy, thick, and waterproof. These characteristics make it better able to withstand contact with water, dirt, and friction.
An alternative is the self-amalgamating silicone tape, which adheres to itself forming a rubber-like layer. It is elastic, durable, and has the advantage of not leaving sticky residues on the wheels.
Better to avoid paper tape, which tends to deteriorate quickly with water and friction. Even ordinary insulating tape isn’t the ideal solution: being very thin, it can shift easily and lose effectiveness, especially with heat.
Before applying the tape, it is therefore important that the wheels are clean and dry. You can proceed by carefully wrapping the outer surface of the wheel, avoiding the creation of irregular thicknesses that could compromise movement. With a few minutes of work, a simple suitcase can thus be better prepared to face sidewalks, stations, airports, and roads during the journey.
