A mystery had everyone talking in Canada: for a few weeks, within the Williston Lake in British Columbia an island covered with trees appeared, large enough to be noticed, yet as quickly as it appeared it disappeared. The episode intrigued travelers, technicians and residents who even initially speculated it was AI-generated fake news, but satellite verifications confirmed the event.

It’s not magic, nor artificial intelligence: the phenomenon already has a scientific explanation. The unusual formation was observed in the Williston Reservoir, inland British Columbia, about 100 kilometers west of the W.A.C. Bennett Dam. It is a reservoir of impressive size, surrounded by forests and sparsely populated areas, where checking every corner of the surface is practically impossible.
What made the sighting extraordinary were especially the island’s dimensions. Satellite images dated July 21, 2026 allowed an estimate of about 140 meters in length and about 70 meters in width, covering an area close to 10,000 square meters. When newer satellite measurements were carried out on August 5, however, there was no trace of the island.
How can a floating island form?
According to experts, the formation could have gradually originated along the basin’s shores through a combination of logs, branches, and other vegetal material carried by water: with silt, sediments and organic matter, a floating surface formed progressively. With seeds transported by wind and water, small plants managed to take root first and then trees, and it is known that roots help make structures more compact and solid. Credible sources explain that the vegetation already developed is evidence that the island had begun its development well before the sighting.
The detachment has nothing to do with anything supernatural; the basin hadn’t been this full in about 14 years, and the rise in water level could have favored the ascent of the “natural raft.”
Where did the mysterious island go?
Many people are more curious about the disappearance than the appearance; after all it’s easy to understand how it formed, but now everyone wonders where it went. The absence of satellite images does not imply that it sank; one possibility is that the wind carried it toward a more sheltered area of the lake, bringing it closer to shore. It could also have been broken apart during its movement.
Natural floating islands are not a phenomenon exclusive to Canada: similar situations have been documented in other parts of the world. In Italy, for example, the floating vegetation of Lake Posta Fibreno in Lazio was nicknamed “La Rota.”
The one that appeared in the heart of British Columbia, however, had something particularly cinematic: an unknown forest appeared in the middle of a vast lake, observed for a few days and then swallowed again by the landscape. Perhaps the island is still out there, hidden in some inlet of the Williston Reservoir. And it could take only a new change of wind for it to drift back into view.
