In recent years, aided by an ever more unstable global context, the demand for underground shelters has transformed radically: what was once a Spartan environment intended for survival in war or catastrophe now takes on the traits of a top-tier refuge, designed for a restricted elite.
Thus, the idea of bunkers that are not only secure but also luxurious is no longer a cinematic fantasy: it is becoming reality, propelled by the efforts of highly specialized companies such as the Strategically Armored & Fortified Environments, known by the acronym SAFE.
When Security Meets Design
SAFE, an American company based in Virginia with a history of more than fifty years in residential security, is at the center of an ambitious project that is catching the attention of the global jet set. In the summer of 2026, it will officially launch “Aerie,” a network of nuclear shelters that redefines the very concept of survival. The objective is not only to guarantee protection in emergencies, but to do so with the utmost comfort, with standards that rival the world’s most exclusive resorts.
The proposal is explicitly targeted at the 1% of the global population: people with such vast fortunes that they can invest up to $20 million to secure a place in the network. There will be 625 units available, initially distributed across 50 American cities. But the project has a global horizon, with plans to expand to around a thousand affiliated sites worldwide.
A Five-Star Experience Beneath the Surface
Aerie takes its name from an elevated lookout point characteristic of birds of prey, and reimagines the concept by creating a shelter that, while located underground, offers the opposite sensation: the feeling of being on top of the world. The interiors, in fact, are equipped with immersive technologies that simulate external landscapes with interactive walls and ceilings. One room can give the illusion of overlooking a cliff, another of being surrounded by the profile of a metropolis.
The living spaces range from private suites of about 185 square meters to true underground penthouses exceeding 1,800 square meters. Each unit is entirely customizable, and every detail (from material selection to smart-home technologies) is designed to guarantee the highest level of comfort and control for the owner, without the need to rely on external staff.
But what sets Aerie apart from any other similar project is its focus on health and well-being. It is not merely about surviving, but about living well even under extreme conditions. All facilities will feature an advanced medical area, called MediShield, designed to provide emergency healthcare and ongoing treatments in case of prolonged isolation from the outside world. At the heart of this system, artificial intelligence technologies will be able to analyze, monitor, and intervene promptly in case of clinical needs.
Inside the bunkers there are also spaces dedicated to physical and regenerative therapies. In addition to treatment rooms and medical intervention spaces, there are planned environments for ice immersion, hyperbaric chambers for the administration of concentrated oxygen, and rooms dedicated to intravenous therapy, services that enhance physical performance and also contribute to reducing stress and optimizing cellular functions, thus addressing needs well beyond mere emergency response.
A Modular Project, Designed to Expand
Each Aerie site will be structured in a modular manner, with a minimum of two underground levels. However, on the most suitable sites, the number of levels can exceed twenty, accommodating up to 200 residences per building. An approach that makes each complex adaptable to the geological conditions of the location, without compromising the safety standards and the luxury that characterize the entire network.
The residences will be accessible only to club members, who will be able to use the various facilities as true global properties, moving from one location to another according to needs or geopolitical scenarios. The symbolic crown of each complex will be represented by the penthouse, defined by the designers as the ultimate emblem of the fusion between exclusivity, resilience, and refinement.
