What it’s about
In the 38th installment of the Marvel saga, directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, the story picks up four years after the events of the previous film: the world has forgotten his name, just as he had requested, and Peter Parker now leads a quiet everyday life consisting of university studies, a part-time job, a complicated relationship with his ex-girlfriend (Zendaya’s character), and responsibilities as Spider-Man “of the neighborhood”. When a mysterious force arrives to threaten New York, however, the superhero is forced to confront the past and its shadows and to contend with a strange mutation of his own body, as well as the rebirth of his powers.
Where the film was shot
Set in New York, Spider-Man: Brand New Day was actually filmed entirely in the United Kingdom, across soundstages — at Pinewood Studios in Iver Heath, for example, where the block housing Peter Parker’s new residence was rebuilt — and on-location sets arranged in industrial areas and in downtown Glasgow.
Glasgow
It isn’t the first time Scotland’s capital has portrayed “the New York part” on screen: for superhero films, here some scenes of The Flash and The Batman set in Gotham City, the dark double of the Big Apple, have been shot. Last year in Glasgow, the remake of the classic 1980s sci‑fi inspired by Stephen King’s The Running Man was filmed. With its numerous offices and commercial spaces and streets busy at all hours of the day and night, the heart of Glasgow’s centre mainly evokes an American city with adrenaline‑driven, sometimes unpredictable rhythms.
Online, those who mapped the Glasgow locations for Spider-Man: Brand New Day suggested marking the following addresses: Bothwell Street, St. Vincent Street, Waterloo Street, Oak Street. These are shopping arteries and, more broadly, the economic lifeblood of the city that frame and grant access to one of its oldest yet most glamorous districts: Merchant City.
Here, among luxurious Victorian-era buildings, you’ll find art galleries, fashionable boutiques, and venues beloved for the nightlife. Not to miss are the City Halls, the old fruit market, Merchant Square, the City Centre Mural Trail with its numerous artworks displayed side by side, as well as several museums.
The neighborhood, always bustling with tourists and locals, is adjacent to Glasgow’s historic city centre, home to attractions not to be missed if you want to grasp Scotland’s more authentic soul.
The Fanum House
Shifting from Scotland to Hampshire, some sources point to the Fanum House in Basingstoke as a real location for Spider-Man: Brand New Day. This is the former HQ of the AA, one of Britain’s leading motoring associations, inaugurated in the 1970s by Queen Elizabeth II. Today it no longer houses offices or representation facilities for the association and, more than once, demolition has been discussed. With its seventeen floors and its industrial aesthetic, the “temple” of the AA — fanum meaning temple in Latin — still stands out in the landscape and among the surrounding road junctions.
