Record-Breaking 11,000-Pumpkin Mosaic for David Attenborough

September 26, 2026

Approximately 11,000 pumpkins, a hillside transformed into a gigantic canvas, and a good deal of precision to craft an artwork that can be truly appreciated only when viewed from above. In England, a Hampshire farm welcomed autumn by setting a curious Guinness World Record: the largest pumpkin mosaic in the world. Perfect timing, as we draw nearer to Halloween.

Seen up close, the installation appears as a vast spread of pumpkins and vegetables in varying shades. Yet a change of perspective reveals something entirely different: the portrait of one of the world’s best-known British figures, chosen by the public to celebrate a very special birthday.

Who is depicted in the world’s largest pumpkin mosaic

The work was created by Sunnyfields Farm in Totton, Hampshire, using about 11,000 pumpkins and squashes, all featuring their natural hues. The result covers an area of 218.2 square meters and officially entered the Guinness World Record as the largest mosaic of this kind ever made.

The face visible from above is that of David Attenborough, the British naturalist and broadcaster who turned 100 years old in May 2026. In the mosaic, he is depicted alongside the number 100 and a small frog resting on his hand, a detail that inevitably calls to mind the natural world to which he has dedicated much of his life.

The choice was not accidental. As happens every year, the farm asked the public via social media which figure they would like to see transformed into the new giant mosaic, and Attenborough quickly rose to the top of the preferences. The final project was entrusted to artist Andrew Bega, who had to simplify the facial features while keeping the portrait instantly recognizable.

To turn the drawing into reality 18 team members were needed, along with three telescopic handlers and about five hours of work. The structure on which the mosaic is built was also expanded with roughly 20 tons of extra soil to achieve a larger surface than in previous years.

Where to see the giant pumpkin mosaic

For Sunnyfields Farm, autumn has become a real tradition; the farm has for years crafted spectacular pumpkin arrangements, and the Attenborough mosaic allowed it to claim the world record for the third time in four years. In 2025 the subject had been Ozzy Osbourne: his portrait covered 212 square meters and had already earned the Guinness World Record. Even earlier, in 2023, the farm had earned its first record with a mosaic of 193.35 square meters inspired by a famous scene from Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas.

Anyone in England during autumn can view the new work at Sunnyfields Farm, near Totton, in Hampshire. The mosaic is part of Pumpkin Time, the farm’s seasonal event dedicated to pumpkins, featuring installations, photo areas, and pumpkin-picking activities.

This year’s portrait, however, also carries a special meaning. It’s not merely another successful attempt at beating a record: it is a gigantic and unusual to the 100th birthday of David Attenborough, built with thousands of autumn colors and visible in its astonishing form only by changing perspective.
