The Calabria region is ready to travel the taste trail with the Treno del Tartufo: on Friday, August 28, it officially departs from the stations on the Tirrenica line to arrive in Pizzo in the afternoon, but the initiative will be repeated on September 5. The day of indulgence is set to reveal one of the most beloved towns along the Coast of the Gods by tapping into the slow travel trend. The event is organized by the Associazione Ferrovie in Calabria APS within the Rail Tour project, which offers a winning formula: you start from the platform, you explore the territory, and you savor a tasting. This edition spotlights the Tartufo di Pizzo.
The rail route will follow the Tirrenica Meridionale, also passing through the scenic “Via Tropea,” where the sea is often just a few meters from the tracks. The journey starts at Reggio Calabria Centrale, with planned stops at Villa San Giovanni, Scilla, and Bagnara.
The Truffle Train Itinerary
The itinerary of the Truffle Train begins from Reggio Calabria Centrale at 2:00 PM on August 28 and will be repeated on September 5. The arrival is scheduled for 5:00 PM at the station of Pizzo where there will initially be a short free period before the group is gathered by a licensed tour guide.
The organizers have chosen an afternoon-to-evening format known as “Pizzo by night,” with several moments distributed between the coastal area and the heart of the village. The first stop is Murat Castle, a historic site: the fortress dominates the town center and is known for Gioacchino Murat’s final days of captivity, during which he was shot in 1815.
The tour then continues with the Piedigrotta Church, a evocative site on the Vibonese coast. Its structure is carved directly into the rock, hugging the sea, and it enchants with exposed tuff and a unique panorama. For the transfers, a comfortable rubber-tired tourist train is provided, so no one will tire himself out.
There will also be room to move freely. The program allocates time in the historic center, among squares, alleys, sea views, and venues. The final experience is the tasting of the Tartufo di Pizzo, the ice cream born in the town itself, which will serve as the thread running through the experience. A delicious activity that captures the interest of both tourists and Calabrian locals, offering a new and original way to discover the territory.
