What it’s about
A night train is travelling from Glasgow to London when a group of cybercriminals hacks it, taking control. On board is Joe Roag, a police officer played by Joe Cole who will prove essential in managing the other passengers and in solving the crisis: he takes on the role of supporting Abby Aysgarth, interim Technical Director of the National Cyber Security Centre played by Alexandra Roach, who bears the burden of trying to stop the train before the cyber incident becomes a tragedy. Who is the mysterious “Driver” who has taken command of the vehicle? Is he alone or does he have accomplices on the train? Whom can they trust? These are the main dilemmas the two will have to face.
Where the series was filmed
The new Sky thriller series was filmed, as mentioned, primarily in Scotland: in Glasgow, where the night-train adventure begins, and at other high-traffic rail hubs, notably Dalmuir.
Glasgow
At the Glasgow Central Station the opening shots of the series were filmed: on screen anyone who has ever been there will surely recognize the great rail hub crowned among the top three busiest stations in the United Kingdom outside of London—roughly 25 million passengers pass through annually—and among the most appreciated by travelers for convenience and services.
From the original Glasgow Central Station project dating back to the late 19th century, after numerous rebuilds, almost only the so-called “Hielanman’s Umbrella” remains: a large concourse with skylight that connects two wings of the station and often acts as a shelter on rainy days for travelers waiting on the platform, passengers without tickets, companions waiting to say goodbye or to reunite with loved ones.
In Glasgow another Nightsleeper – Out of Control location is Riverside Campus: one of the campuses of the City of Glasgow College. Overlooking the River Clyde, with its expansive spaces open to the public, such as the cloister garden and the large hall, this new campus confirms the college’s intention to position itself as a public institution.
Dalrmuir Station
Another location where the new Sky thriller with Alexandra Roach and Joe Cole was filmed is the Dalmuir Station: one of the largest interchange stations in this part of Scotland, located about sixteen kilometres from Glasgow and thus frequented daily by a large number of workers, students, and commuters. The original layout, also from the 19th century, has undergone numerous alterations over time.
Victoria Station in London
Some of the final scenes were shot outside Victoria Station in London: its architecture, dominated by iron and glass, is unmistakable and harkens directly back to the era of the Great Exhibitions. The station was built, in fact, for the 1851 Great Exhibition to serve the pavilion. Today it connects the city mainly with the southeastern area of England, also via numerous suburban services.
