The Tuscany and its hills are always on everyone’s lips, continually revealing treasures. The Montecchio Vesponi Castle is one of these: perched on a hill between Castiglion Fiorentino and Cortona, it dominates the Val di Chiana with its crenellated walls and the large square tower. But what makes this place even more fascinating is not only its appearance, but also its history.
For centuries, this Tuscan castle was contested by Arezzo, Florence, and other local powers, and in the fourteenth century it even became the residence of Giovanni Acuto, the famous English mercenary captain who has gone down in history as one of the most important condottieri in the service of Florence.
A Thousand-Year-Old Castle Contested Between Arezzo and Florence
The origins of Montecchio Vesponi dive into the Middle Ages: the castle is already documented in 1014, under the name Castrum Montis Guisponi, even though the fortified settlement was probably already in existence from the 10th century. In 1234 the complex passed to the Commune of Arezzo, which strengthened its defenses. A few decades later, in 1289, the defeat of the Arezzo in the Battle of Campaldino helped shift the castle into the Florentine orbit. Montecchio repeatedly returned under different spheres of influence, becoming a true border fortress in a strategically located area of medieval Tuscany.
But perhaps the most curious tale linked to the castle is another. In the XIVth century it was occupied by John Hawkwood, known in Italy as Giovanni Acuto, an English captain of fortune who built much of his fame fighting in the Italian wars. In Florence, after his death, the famous equestrian monument painted by Paolo Uccello in the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore was dedicated to him, one of the most recognizable images of 15th-century art.
One of the most spectacular aspects still visible at Montecchio Vesponi is its defensive curtain wall. The fortifications almost entirely follow the profile of the hill, creating a kind of defensive ring about 263 meters long. The circuit was punctuated by watchtowers and even today it allows visitors to clearly read the fortress’s original layout. Dominating the complex is the square tower, about 30 meters high, visible from great distances in the valley.
During the visit, it is possible to discover several rooms and structures that recount the various phases of the complex’s history. Among the most important elements is the 14th-century Cassero, the heart of the fortress, along with the Casa del Giusdicente, also known as the Palace of the Tribunal, dating to the previous century. Nearby is also the 13th-century tower, which represented the power of the Commune of Arezzo at the time of its construction.

The Montecchio Vesponi Castle is located in the locality of the same name within the municipality of Castiglion Fiorentino, in the province of Arezzo, along the SR71 Umbro-Casentinese, between Castiglion Fiorentino and Cortona. From its position it dominates the Val di Chiana and is close to some of the most interesting villages and art towns of the Arezzo area.
The castle is a private property but it is opened to the public through guided tours organized by the InCastro Association. Visits require a reservation, and dates are periodically announced by the association. The ticket price for guided tours is €10 for adults, €5 for children from 6 to 10 years old, while admission is free for children up to 5 years old.
