Liechtensteinklamm Gorge: How to Visit and Practical Information

Arriving in front of the Liechtensteinklamm triggers a kind of short circuit: just a few minutes earlier the landscape unfolds with orderly meadows, wooden chalets, and quiet bends of the Grossarl Valley. Then the scenery tightens, the air cools, and the sound of the water swells until it fills everything. The reason lies in standing before a spectacular gorge located in St. Johann im Pongau, about 65 kilometers south of Salzburg.

Just think: in terms of depth and grandeur it is regarded as one of the most extraordinary ravines in the Alps, to the point that some sections reach nearly 300 meters in height. The thunder of the water ricochets off the vertical walls, and when the sun finally enters the gorge at noon, the spray created by the cascades lights up sudden rainbows among the rocks.

Rugged nature and contemporary engineering coexist in the same space thanks to metal footbridges, bridges anchored to the mountain, rock-carved galleries, and the famous Helix Stair (a 30-meter-high Corten steel spiral that plunges toward the bottom of the gorge with a futuristic geometry). We’re talking about extraordinary elements that accompany the visitor into a nearly theatrical setting.

Before its public opening in 1876, this Alpine canyon represented a place almost inaccessible. The transformation owes much to the Pongau section of the Austrian Alpine Club and, above all, to Prince Johann II of Liechtenstein, the decisive financier of the project.

Origin and Formation of Liechtensteinklamm

The origin of this natural masterpiece of Austria goes back to the last glacial period. About 15,000 years ago, the enormous glacier in the Tyrolean region occupied the Salzach Valley with an immense mass of ice up to 3,000 meters high. That white giant advanced slowly, scraping mountains and shaping rock faces through a continuous pressure that lasted for thousands of years.


With the Würm glaciation’s end, the glacier disappeared, leaving behind vast limestone walls exposed to the elements. From then on, the tireless work of the Grossarler Ache began. Torrent after torrent, flood after flood, the water carved into the mountain, giving life to a gorge roughly 4 kilometers long, extremely narrow in several passages and deeply impressive at the most spectacular points.

Looking at the gorge walls, the signs of erosion stand out clearly: smooth rocks, natural curves, polished hollows, and channels carved by the current tell a slow geological history. Rugged walls alternate with stretches almost polished by the force of the water, while some gigantic boulders remain wedged above the stream and small side waterfalls tumble among ferns and lush green moss.

The scenic effect also depends on light. Much of the day remains in shadow due to the height of the walls. When the sun reaches the bottom of the gorge, the water mist reflects silver glints and colored rings. From a naturalistic standpoint, Liechtensteinklamm stands as one of the country’s most important natural monuments.

For this reason, environmental protection and safety coexist through sophisticated technical interventions. After a landslide in 2017, the site was temporarily closed. The 2020 reopening brought new galleries, avalanche nets longer than 1,100 meters, and a monitoring system capable of detecting even minimal movements in the rock.

Footbridges, Cascades, and the Vertigo of the Helix Stair: How the Visit Works

First and foremost, know that the experience inside the Liechtensteinklamm is physical first and then panoramic. The noise, humidity, and vibration of the water accompany the entire route. The accessible tourist path measures about one kilometer and typically takes around 1.5 hours for a round trip. For the whole visit, therefore, plan on at least three hours.

After entry, metal bridges and tunnels carved into the mountain begin right away. There are sections that pass beside extremely narrow walls, while others open above frothy pools swept by powerful jets. The water of the Grossarler Ache appears almost white due to the speed of the current.

Helix arrives shortly after the first stretch of the route and it is impossible to remain unmoved by its structure. A spiral staircase in Corten steel, modern and sculptural, descends into the gorge along a spiral line that intensifies the sense of depth. Seen from above, it resembles a gigantic screw embedded in the mountain.

Contemporary architecture and the alpine landscape here engage in a surprisingly harmonious dialogue. Rust-colored steel, wet rock, and vegetation stage a palette that is almost moving. Further along the route the path reaches the grand final waterfall, standing roughly 49 meters high. From here the water plunges with deafening force into a moss-covered stone amphitheater. A fine mist and icy droplets fill the air, and standing still in front of that point is to feel the canyon’s full power.

During some special May evenings, the “Klammwolke” comes to life, a celebratory event held with torches, classical music, and dramatic lighting. The gorge changes its face: it fills with golden reflections on the damp walls, water lit from below, and Alpine darkness.

Where It Is and How to Get There

Liechtensteinklamm is located in St. Johann im Pongau, in the state of Salzburg, central Austria. By car, the simplest route goes via the A10 Tauern Autobahn with an exit onto the B311 toward the Plankenau district. Five parking lots serve the gorge area, with P1 located next to the main entrance. From there, a short paved stretch of about 450 meters leads to the ticket office and the canyon entrance.

Those who prefer public transport can reach St. Johann by train from Salzburg. A city bus then connects the town center to the Plankenau area. The final stretch, however, must be walked through trees and green slopes before the scenery changes completely.

The tourist season runs from May to the end of October. From May to September, access is open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., while October follows reduced hours until 4 p.m. Summer and early autumn are the most evocative periods thanks to the river’s volume and the play of light inside the gorge. Suitable footwear and good stability help a lot along footbridges and metal stairs, especially because some sections are moist and slippery due to the constant mist produced by the cascades.

Then comes the moment of departure: with the sound of the water behind you and the Salzburger Valley unfolding before your eyes, you are greeted by a rare sensation—one of those places that can feel both ancient and futuristic at the same moment.
