How to Get a Non-Refundable Flight Refunded: Essential Tips

September 4, 2026

Buying a non-refundable airline ticket usually means accepting to lose the money if you cancel. But not everything is lost: there are situations and tools that allow you to get a refund, even if only partial. Let’s look at the rights of passengers and all the cases in which it’s possible to recover at least part of the cost and how to proceed, step by step.

The fare conditions of your ticket

The first step is to read carefully the fare terms indicated on the ticket or in the confirmation received by email. Even if the label “non-refundable” seems to shut down every possibility, some airlines provide exceptions: in certain cases you can recover airport taxes or obtain a partial refund for unused services. Moreover, some fares allow changes with penalties, rather than losing the ticket entirely. To find out, it’s useful to access the booking management section on the airline’s website and check the rules that apply to your specific fare.

Refund of airport taxes

Even when the ticket is non-refundable, it is almost always possible to recover the amount of airport taxes, because these are paid only if the passenger actually flies. If you forgo the flight, you are entitled to the return of this portion. To do this, you must fill out the appropriate request form on the airline’s site, specifying that the flight was not used. In some cases, the airline may retain a small amount as an administrative fee for processing the request.

Refund in case of flight cancellation

If the flight is canceled directly by the airline, the passenger is entitled to a full refund of the ticket, even if this was a non-refundable fare. This right is established by Regulation (EC) 261/2004, which protects European travelers in case of service disruptions. In addition to the refund, in many cases it is possible to choose an alternative flight. However, if the cancellation is due to extraordinary circumstances such as bad weather or external strikes, the airline is not obliged to pay compensation, but it remains required to reimburse the amount paid.

In case of prolonged delay: request a refund or compensation

A particularly long delay or missing a connection may entitle you to a refund or to compensation. If the flight suffers a delay of more than five hours and you choose not to travel, the passenger is entitled to a full refund of the ticket, even if it was non-refundable. If you do take the flight and arrival at the destination occurs more than three hours late, you may be entitled to a monetary compensation, which varies based on the distance traveled, up to a maximum of 600 euros.

Travel insurance

Many travel insurance policies provide for the reimbursement of the flight in case of serious unforeseen events, such as illness, injury, a bereavement in the family, or work-related problems. Also some credit cards, especially the premium ones, offer policies that cover cancellations. To obtain the refund, you need to contact the insurer or the entity that issued the card, providing the requested documentation: medical certificates, official attestations or other supporting documents. If the claim is accepted, the refund will be paid directly by the insurance company.

Illness or bereavement: the required documentation

Some airlines accept refund requests, even for non-refundable tickets, if the flight cancellation is due to health reasons or a bereavement. In these cases, it’s important to send promptly all the necessary documentation, such as a medical certificate or a death certificate, together with the flight and passenger details. Each airline has different rules and timelines for handling these situations, but it’s worth trying: in many cases the request is granted.

Specialized platforms for refunds

In recent years, several online platforms have emerged that handle the management of refunds and compensations for flights that are canceled, delayed or have issues of overbooking. These online agencies take care of presenting the claim to the airline and following it through to its conclusion. Their fee usually consists of a percentage retained only in case of a successful outcome. They are a good solution for those who don’t have time or desire to deal with the bureaucracy themselves.

A voucher as an alternative to a refund

When it isn’t possible to obtain a cash refund, some airlines offer an alternative in the form of a voucher, of equal value to the purchased ticket. The voucher can be used to book another flight within a certain period. It isn’t a genuine refund, but it can still be a useful solution, especially if you plan to travel again with that airline.

Via agency or OTA

If the flight was purchased through a traditional or online travel agency, you should not contact the airline directly, but you must contact the intermediary’s customer service. The refund, change, or voucher request procedures must be handled through the platform used for purchase, following the instructions provided by the portal.

Complaint or dispute

If the airline refuses the refund unjustifiably or does not comply with the applicable guidelines, you can file a complaint with ENAC (the National Civil Aviation Authority) for flights departing from or arriving in Italy. Alternatively, if the ticket was paid by credit card, you may consider starting a chargeback through your bank, contesting the transaction for non-delivery of the service. In this case, you will also need to attach documentation proving your right to the refund.
