From September 6 to December 27, 2026, Campania returns to riding the rails of the past with a new season of historic trains. There will be over 30 trips scheduled on weekends, envisioned to transform travel into an experience capable of uniting slow tourism, culture, history, and sustainable mobility. The initiative is promoted by the Campania Region through ACaMIR (Agenzia Campana per la Mobilità, le Infrastrutture e le Reti), in collaboration with the Fondazione Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane and local authorities.
The program winds through some of the region’s most interesting locations, from major art cities to archaeological sites, and to small inland villages. For definitive information on dates, times, fares and booking methods for the individual runs, official details will be announced soon.
Pietrarsa Express, a journey through the history of the railways
The season will open with the Pietrarsa Express, whose first trip is slated for Sunday, September 6. The historic train will depart from Napoli Centrale and arrive at the National Railway Museum of Pietrarsa, one of the most meaningful destinations for exploring the history of Italy’s railways.
The appeal of the itinerary lies also in the possibility of reaching the museum aboard a heritage train, making the journey an integral part of the visit. A captivating way to rediscover a place tied to the evolution of Italy’s railway transport.
Reggia Express, from Naples to the Royal Palace of Caserta
The second offering is the Reggia Express, which will link Napoli Centrale to the Caserta station aboard a historic train. The first departure is scheduled for Sunday, September 13.
The special feature of the itinerary is the Caserta railway station’s location, situated a short distance from the Vanvitellian Complex of the Royal Palace of Caserta. Once disembarking, passengers will be able to reach one of Campania’s most important monuments easily, with no long transfers.
Archeotreno, following in the footsteps of Pompeii and Paestum
The archaeological heritage will be the star of the Archeotreno, with departures from Naples to two sites of great significance: Pompeii and Paestum. The first trip is scheduled for Sunday, October 18.
The idea is to facilitate access to important archaeological areas through a rail connection with strong tourist and cultural value. The journey thus becomes part of the experience, guiding visitors to places that recount some of the most important chapters of Campania’s ancient history.
Ferrovia dell’Irpinia, between villages and inland landscapes
From September 13, the program will also extend to Irpinia, with departures from Avellino along the historic Irpinia Railway. The vintage railcars will reach villages such as Montella, Lioni, Montemarano, Paternopoli, Taurasi, Cassano Irpino, and Sant’Angelo dei Lombardi.
To make visits easier, the trip will be complemented by an integrated shuttle bus service from the stations to the inhabited centers. A system designed to showcase inland areas and encourage the discovery of villages, landscapes, and local heritage.
