Helsinki in 2027: Why It’s the Right Year to Visit Finland’s Capital

October 22, 2026

In 2027, Helsinki is preparing to welcome travelers with new opportunities to reach the Finnish capital from Italy, cultural venues ready to reopen, and sporting events capable of attracting enthusiasts from around the world. Located on the Baltic Sea, the city is an ideal destination for those who enjoy alternating museums, contemporary architecture, saunas, and strolls. Its Nordic atmosphere, blending design, nature, and quality of life, lends itself to a city break in every season.

Here are our three reasons to visit Helsinki in 2027.

New Finnair Flights from Italy

The main novelty for those dreaming of a trip to the Finnish capital concerns air connections. From the end of March 2027, Finnair will introduce the Airbus A350 on the route between Milan Malpensa and Helsinki, deploying it during the summer season on the daily morning flight.

It is an aircraft designed for long distances, which will allow travelers to experience an intercontinental-flight ambiance even on a roughly three-hour flight. The choice responds to growing demand between Milan and the Nordic countries and opens up new possibilities to continue toward Asian destinations and the West Coast of the United States via the Helsinki hub.

The news for the Italian market does not stop here. Finnair has announced the extension of the connection with Turin for the winter season, with a weekly flight on Saturdays, in addition to the extension of summer services to Florence and Catania.

Seurasaari Open-Air Museum Reopens

Among the stops to include in the 2027 itinerary is the Seurasaari Open-Air Museum, which will reopen to the public on May 15, after the winter closing. Located on an island connected to the mainland by a pedestrian bridge, it is one of the most evocative attractions for discovering Finnish history and traditions set in nature.

The museum comprises 89 historic buildings relocated from various regions of Finland, including ancient wooden houses dating back to the 17th century. Walking through courtyards and traditional structures, you can learn more closely about rural life of bygone centuries, domestic customs, and the architectural differences between the country’s various areas. The visit thus becomes an opportunity to go beyond modern Helsinki and discover its cultural roots.

The seasonal opening is planned until September 15, 2027.

Sporting Events of 2027

The sports calendar offers another reason to plan a trip to Helsinki in 2027, especially for those who love running or international events.

The first date to mark is the Valio Helsinki City Run, scheduled for May 7 and 8. Considered Finland’s largest running event, it gathers participants from over 100 countries and offers several distances, from a five-kilometer run to the half marathon, up to the marathon and relay races.

Those who prefer to visit the city in the summer can instead aim for the Björn Borg Helsinki Marathon, planned for August 28, 2027. The course winds through the city center and waterfront areas, with distances suitable for both experienced runners and those looking to try a shorter route: marathon, half marathon, 10 kilometers, and relay.
