A few kilometers from Bressanone, the Novacella Abbey stands as one of the most important monastic complexes in South Tyrol. Founded in the twelfth century and still today inhabited by Augustinian Canons, it is a place where history, art, spirituality and tradition truly enchant visitors.
Beyond its religious and cultural value, it is also renowned for its historic wine production, which helps make it one of the most interesting destinations in the Isarco Valley.
What to see at the Novacella Abbey
The visit allows exploring an architectural complex that tells centuries of history through buildings from different eras and styles. The heart of the monastery is the Basilica of Santa Maria Assunta, a remarkable example of Baroque and Rococo architecture, flanked by the Gothic cloister, enhanced by frescoes and a intimate atmosphere that testifies to the long spiritual life of the monastic community.

At the entrance of the complex you encounter Castel Sant’Angelo, a circular-plan building erected to welcome pilgrims and inspired by the Roman monument of the same name. A stop is also well worth the historic garden, restored and reopened to the public in 2004, and the hydraulic works that recount the organization of monastic life over the centuries.
The wine tradition that continues to this day
As mentioned, the Novacella Abbey is also a very active production site. Surrounding the monastery lie what are considered the northernmost vineyards in Italy, from which some of the most representative white wines of the Isarco Valley originate.

The Novacella Abbey can be visited independently from Monday to Saturday. Access is allowed from 10:00 to 17:00, with the last entry at 16:15, while on Sundays and during religious holidays the complex is not open to visits.
