What it’s about
Tegan (Miku Martineau) is sixteen and has just moved from California to the East Coast with her mother because of a family scandal that shook them and forced a fresh start. At the new school, the prestigious East Prep, there isn’t a women’s rowing team, and the only way Tegan can keep pursuing the sport she loves is to join the boys’ team. At first, the teammates don’t seem ready to accept her in the role of coxswain.
Over time, what begins as mere tiffs and pranks reveal themselves to be genuine attention from others toward Tegan—especially from Josh (Sam Braun), the arrogant captain of the squad, and the talented Cam (Kyle Clark).
Where the series was filmed
As mentioned in part, although it is set on the East Coast, Crew Girl was not filmed in the United States but in Canada, in British Columbia.
Victoria
Eagle’s Cove, the fictional city where Tegan relocates with her mother, is more precisely Victoria: the elegant capital of British Columbia where history and modernity meet. The refined Victorian-style mansions and the romantic English-style gardens are part of the city’s identity as much as its modern, state-of-the-art buildings and infrastructure.

On screen you can easily spot Tillucum Bridge, also known locally as “The Gorge Bridge,” and the oldest Selkirk Trestle, a wooden bridge that spans the Gorge River and was once used to transport materials.
In town, the production of Crew Girl also transformed several sports centers into sets, such as the Victoria City Rowing Club and the Gorge Narrows Rowing Club.
“The Gorge” and Elk Lake
Those scenes tied to rowing, training, and races are central to the series. Contrary to what one might expect, they aren’t mere studio shoots with digital effects: the production shot on “The Gorge,” as locals call the river that threads through the city, offering with the surrounding greenery a refreshing sanctuary from urban life. The Tillicum Narrows rapids are among the river’s most adrenaline-pumping spots for rowing and other water sports in reality as well.
Other water scenes were filmed at Elk Lake: a lake area formed by the confluence with Beaver Lake, popular with families and more, for relaxing on the beach, picnicking, or trying out one of the many outdoor activities the area is equipped for.
Hatley Castle
Also the East Prep, Tegan’s new school, does not exist in real life. Interior campus scenes were filmed near Hatley Castle: a historic building dating back to the early 20th century, today part of the Royal Roads University campus in Colwood, not far from Victoria. The crenellated turrets, the stone facade, and the expansive, meticulously kept gardens surrounding it are among Hatley Castle’s most iconic features, along with the vast interior halls that were once dormitories for local army cadets and have frequently appeared on screen in films like X-Men, for example, and in the series Smallville.
