The reopening of the Cattolica di Stilo
The long closure was absolutely necessary to reopen the Cattolica di Stilo in Calabria and to carry out precise interventions on walls and surfaces, restoring some architectural elements of the church. The project dealt with the conservation of all historical materials and the prevention of deterioration, avoiding any changes to the place’s identity. Among the improvements were introduced new information points and tools designed to make the reading of the building easier; greater attention was paid to those with sensory, physical, or cognitive difficulties, enhancing accessibility. Notable improvements were also made to security systems and video surveillance.
What to see at the Cattolica di Stilo
The Cattolica was built between the late 10th and the early 11th century. The name is traced to the Greek term Katholikon, used to denote the main church of a monastic complex or a worship center connected to eremitic communities. On the exterior the five small domes rising above a compact, almost cubical structure leave a strong impression. The bricks form simple and regular patterns, while the elevated position opens the view toward Stilo and the valley.
Inside, the Greek-cross plan is defined by four recycled columns, probably taken from older buildings. On one of these a cross with a Latin inscription appears; on another, inscriptions in Arabic are carved. These signs continue to raise questions about the building’s history and the people who passed through it over the centuries. The most striking feature comes from the frescoes, with paintings that attest to different phases and symbolic transformations of the Middle Ages. One of the best-known images is the Dormitio Virginis, followed by the Ascension with Christ blessing and the depiction of the saints bishops. Of course, once here, it is worth taking a stroll through the village’s characteristic streets.

To be able to visit the Cattolica di Stilo, you should take note of these details:
- Opening. The site is open from Tuesday to Saturday from 8:30 to 19:30 and on Sunday from 9:30 to 19:30. Monday is a closed day;
- Prices. The full ticket costs 4 euros, while the reduced ticket is 2 euros.
How to reach the Cattolica di Stilo
For those arriving from outside the region to visit the Cattolica di Stilo, the reference airports are Lamezia Terme, Reggio Calabria, and Crotone. The nearest railway station is Monasterace-Stilo, about 14 kilometers away. Driving remains the most practical means to reach Stilo and to move around the Stilaro Valley. Once you arrive in the village, the Cattolica is located at an elevated position at the foot of Monte Consolino.
