TRAIL GUIDE: Grassy Creek Falls NC https://travelbugged.net/trail-guide-grassy-creek-falls-nc/ https://travelbugged.net/trail-guide-grassy-creek-falls-nc/#respond Fri, 01 Jul 2022 11:40:09 +0000 https://travelbugged.net/?p=12754 UPDATE:

Unfortunately the Falls will no longer be open to the public as of August 2022.

We received the following message and we kindly ask you to please refrain from trespassing.

“I represent the new owners of land on which Grassy Creek Falls (Little Switzerland) are located. For decades the prior family allowed day hikers, however, as of August, 2022, they along with the property owners who live along Grassy Creek Falls Road will be posting signage notifying the public that access to the falls is no longer granted. This comes after many years of heavy traffic congestion at peak times, damage to property, trash, noise, etc. and together with the new property owner they regretfully give notice that access to the falls is closed. A few too many bad apples have spoiled it for everyone else. Fortunately, there are plenty of public access falls here in NC, but this one is no longer available to the public. Thank you for your cooperation.”

Grassy Creek Falls is a beautiful waterfall located right in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains and near the small town of Little Switzerland located along the North Carolina Highway 226A.

Grassy Creek Falls, NC

QUICK OVERVIEW:

Length: 2 Miles

Difficulty: EASY

Time to complete: 1 Hour

Elevation: 597 ft

DIRECTIONS: Milepost 334

If you put Grassy Creek in your GPS you will end up about 5 miles further down the road and away from the trailhead. We recommend punching Grassy Creek Falls Road in your navigation device which will bring you right at the entrance to the trail.

Grassy Creek Falls NC

There are several parking spots where hikers can park their car (approximately 10) right as you turn into the road. If you are coming from the Little Switzerland direction the road will be immediately after the tunnel. If you are driving on the Blue Ridge Parkway the road will be right before the tunnel. Please make sure to park in a way that does not block other drivers or the residents that need to get to their homes.

Grassy Creek Falls NC

Once parked follow the gravel road which is the trail. The hike is about a mile long straight down the road. It is relatively easy with a steady decline on the way there and incline on the way back.

Grassy Creek Falls NC

The trail is on PRIVATE PROPERTY. Please be respectful, do not leave any trace, leash your dog if they are coming along and under no circumstances disturb the residents that have graciously allowing us all to enjoy this beautiful waterfall. Do not drive past the sign that is pictured below as the road is only for resident use and not for Falls visitors.

Grassy Creek Falls NC

There are several creek crossing along the way so make sure to wear appropriate footwear. If there has been any rain in the days leading to your visit a part of the path will be pretty muddy.

Grassy Creek Falls NC

The trail is pretty well marked and maintained and you will be able to reach the falls without any issues. If there have been heavy storms in the days leading to your visit the possibility of fallen trees along the road is there so a good plan will be to postpone your visit for another day and give time to clear the roads.

Grassy Creek Falls NC

Ones you near the Falls there are two ways to get to the waterfall. You can follow the gravel road that kind of loops and brings you to the very bottom of the waterfall from where you can make your way to the top falls. Picture of the bottom of the falls below. This way will require you to scramble on the rocks and around the actual waterfall. If you are doing this be extremely careful especially in the winter as the rocks will be frozen and slippery. We went on a day when it was dry and it hasn’t been raining recently and the sides of the Falls were pretty muddy so plan accordingly.

Grassy Creek Falls, NC

The easier and faster way to reach the Falls is to take the steep (only a short trek) way down that will be to your right walking on the road where the waterfalls are visible. (picture bellow)

Grassy Creek Falls, NC

From here you can choose to either enjoy the view from where you are standing or scramble on the rocks and get to the bottom for a different view point of this beautiful waterfall.

If you are feeling adventurous there is a way to get behind the waterfall which is super cool and refreshing in the summer. Again make sure you are wearing appropriate footwear and if you are visiting in the winter keep in mind that it will be slippery and pretty dangerous.

Let us know if you visit and if you enjoyed the falls. We love to hear from you.

If you worked up an appetite after the hike or feel like a refreshment, an ice cream or a drink make sure to stop at the town of Little Switzerland which is actually at a walkable distance from where you parked your car for the trail.

Little Switzerland is located at 3,468 feet above sea level is the narrowest point of the Blue Parkway in North Carolina. It is located directly north of the town of Marion and south of the town of Spruce Pine.

The town was founded by North Carolina Supreme Court Justice Heriot Clarkson in 1909 as a summer retreat in the Blue Ridge Mountain and was given the name because of the picturesque mountain hills that reminded him of the Swiss Alps.

Little Switzerland, North Carolina

The original Little Switzerland Inn was built in 1960 and the access to it was the only commercial access road to the Blue Ridge Parkway. Today the Inn resembles very much the Swiss style chalet architecture that we are used to seeing in pictures from tourists vacationing there. In fact the winter scene can be easily mistaken for an actual scene from the Alps with the snow covered chalet and skiers wandering the grounds.

Little Switzerland, North Carolina

You can spend a night or few at the Little Switzerland Inn. The restaurant on site serving breakfast, lunch and dinner offers a great menu which can be found HERE. Enjoy your meal during your stay, after a hike or while driving on the Blue Ridge Parkway. There is an indoor sitting as well as a beautiful outdoor terrace overlooking the Parkway.

Little Switzerland North Carolina

After you have enjoyed your delicious meal walk it off with a stroll through the little shops around the village.

Little Switzerland North Carolina

If you skip the desert at the Inn but craving something sweet grab an ice cream or pick something to satisfy your sweet tooth at the Swiss Shoppe Ice Cream and Candy Factory shop across the street.

Or visit the Geneva Hall for a variety of events and exhibitions. If you brought a picnic lay a blanket on the greens in front of the Hall or under the trees in the shade next to it and enjoy it while listening to life music and watching the dancers during their Saturday Square Dances events happening in the summer.

Top 30 Day Trips & Hikes From Charlotte https://travelbugged.net/top-30-day-trips-hikes-from-charlotte/ https://travelbugged.net/top-30-day-trips-hikes-from-charlotte/#respond Fri, 17 Dec 2021 20:06:59 +0000 https://travelbugged.net/?p=12644 If you are here chances are you are on a search for the best hikes from Charlotte, North Carolina. We live just north of Charlotte and it is safe to say that we have done pretty much every single hike that is within couple of hours from here. Below we have created a list of some of our top hikes, adventure towns and and places to stop off for a snack, meal or drink.

Before we start here are several things to keep in mind prior to hitting the trail as well as must items to pack in your backpack:

  • Bottle of Water
  • Snacks
  • First Aid Kit
  • Bug Spray
  • Camera
  • Bear Spray
  • Hand Sanitizer
  • Map or downloaded All Trails

Please make sure to take everything back with you as you are leaving the woods.

  • Do Not Litter
  • Do not go off the marked trail path
  • Do not disturb the flora and fauna in any way
  • If a bear is encountered on the trail please keep your distance

Now that we have cleared all of this let’s get to the point. Our list consists of hikes with views, hikes leading to a waterfalls and finally a few adventure towns with broader details on more things to do in and around there so you can spend an entire day at the location.

#1 CROWDERS MOUNTAIN STATE PARK

Crowders Mountain
View From The Top of Crowders Mountain

DISTANCE FROM CHARLOTTE: 36 minutes

We are starting with this particular hike since it is the closest to Charlotte. There are several trails that you can choose from here but the most popular and the one that leads to the summit of the mountain is the Pinnacle Trail.

LENGTH: 4.2 miles

TIME TO COMPLETE: 2 Hours and 30 Minutes

DIFFICULTY: Moderate

The trail begins right at the parking lot past the restrooms. Ample parking is available. You can do the trails two ways. You can turn right where the path splits and take the stairs up or follow the path and take the stairs on your way down. We personally prefer taking the stairs down as it is easier of a hike this way and not as strenuous on your knees. The views from the summit are spectacular however do keep your pets on a leash and kids near by as a drop from the boulders here would be deadly. If rock climbing is something that interests you, Crowders Mountain is a great spot to do that. More information on how to get a rock climbing permit and where to climb can be found on the link HERE.

#2 SOUTH MOUNTAINS STATE PARK

South Mountains State Park
South Mountains State Park

DISTANCE FROM CHARLOTTE: 1 Hour and 15 Minutes

Next up is South Mountains and why we are choosing it as our number two is because of the proximity to Charlotte and the absolute gorgeousness of the park. This particular spot is a must if you live anywhere in the State of North Carolina and the ultimate day trip spot from Charlotte. There are about a dozen trails to choose from here. From views to waterfalls and everything in between, but the most popular trail in the State Park is the High Shoals Falls Loop Trail.

LENGTH: 2.4 miles

TIME TO COMPLETE: 1 Hour and 30 Minutes

DIFFICULTY: Moderate

This particular trail will lead you passed a handful of beautiful waterfalls up steep stairs and passed tall trees. We suggest you wear comfortable shoes as the trail gets slippery after rain and during the winter months. Recently the park cleared a new trail that connects to the High Shoals Falls Trail called Big Bear Falls and we highly recommend taking the turn and exploring it on your way up to the rest of the falls. If you are into camping this park is the ultimate place to pitch a tent and splash by the river or take on any of the hikes available in the park. For information on hours of operation, pricing and availability check the State Park link HERE.

If you have worked up an appetite after the hike there are a good amount of restaurants to choose from on your way back in the town of Lincolnton, NC.

For a drink check out Woodmill Winery (they have the best sweet wine), Untapped Territory or BrickTree Brewery for a local brew.

#3 STONE MOUNTAIN STATE PARK

Stone Mountain State Park
Stone Mountain State Park

DISTANCE FROM CHARLOTTE: 1 Hour and 30 Minutes

Our next hiking suggestion is Stone Mountain State Park. This spot is absolutely spectacular and just like the previous one offers ample hiking trail opportunities with one of the best summit views, waterfalls and so much more. There is not just one favorite trail here so we will tell you about our top three.

  • Stone Mountain Loop Trail

LENGTH: 4.5 miles

TIME TO COMPLETE: 2 Hours and 30 Minutes

DIFFICULTY: Moderate

This trail would take you from the parking lot to the summit, down the steep wooden stairs to the homestead and the profile of the Stone Mountain and finally to the falls if you choose to take right where the trails splits 0.3 miles into your trek. We suggest following the trail this way unless you are looking for more strenuous exercise in which case take left where the trail splits and head to the falls first.

  • Wolf Rock Trail

LENGTH: 2.5 miles

TIME TO COMPLETE: 1 Hour and 30 Minutes

DIFFICULTY: Moderate

Why we love this trail is because of how little trafficked it is and the amazing views it offers both of the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Stone Mountain profile. In order to take this trail park at the lower parking lot and follow the loop trail from there until you reach the fork where the trail splits. You will see the sign for the Wolf Rock Trail to your right. From this point follow the trail up the mountain before reaching the opening with the views of the Blue Ridge. On your way back from here you will see the opening with the view of Stone Mountain and pass by the old Homestead on your way back to the parking lot. If you choose to extend the hike take right once down the mountain and head to the falls. From there you can decide if you will like to take the loop back to the car or just walk pass the homestead and to the parking lot which would be the shorter option.

  • Widows Creek Falls
Widows Creek Falls
Widows Creek Falls

LENGTH: 0.2 miles

TIME TO COMPLETE: 15 Minutes

DIFFICULTY: EASY

This one is not really a hike, but more of a walk in the woods to a beautiful waterfall that doubles as a swimming hole in the summer. It is the ultimate beginners hike and the perfect spot to take the kids to on a hot day.

For things to do on your way back from Stone Mountain check out the Town of Elkin. You will not be disappointed by any of the restaurants in town and there are a ton of extremely good wineries to choose from in the area if you are looking to grab a glass of white or red.  We loved this area so much that we bought a vacation house and rent out this Elkin Airbnb cottage.

#4 CARTER FALLS

Carter Falls
Carter Falls

DISTANCE FROM CHARLOTTE: 1Hour and 15 Minutes

Carter Falls is a great beginners hike and one to bring the kids along to. It’s a short but scenic hike with two waterfalls and a handful of cascades.

LENGTH: 1 Mile Roundtrip

TIME TO COMPLETE: 45 Minutes

DIFFICULTY: EASY

There are several ways to reach Carter Falls. You can park at the trailhead parking lot on Martyn Byrd Road and descend from there, begin at the Byrd’s Branch Campground across the street after grabbing a treat at their store and follow the path through the campsite before reaching the trailhead, extend the trek by starting at Grassy Creek Vineyard after a glass of delicious wine, passing through the Enchanted Forest, pass the Forest Bathing Trail and the Cascades Waterfall (most scenic and longest way) or taking the Issac’s Trailhead at 400 E Carter Road in Elkin, NC which would be the longest.

Note that to reach the base of the 50 foot Carter Falls you will have to use go down a steep path. There is a rope to hold on to on your way up and down which would be helpful for the little ones however do keep an eye on them and keep them close by.

Although on other websites the falls are mentioned as a hidden swimming hole there are clear signs along the path warning against that. The site is an old power mill and metal items and remains are still present as you walk the woods so keep an eye on that. They are marked with orange tape and paint for easy spotting.

#5 PILOT MOUNTAIN STATE PARK

Pilot Mountain, NC
Pilot Mountain, NC

There is a sign right before the end of the trail that states that this trail feels as if you have climbed a ten story building ten times so take at as you will.

  • Jomeokee Trail.

LENGTH: 0.9 Miles

TIME TO COMPLETE: 45 Minutes

DIFFICULTY: EASY

This trail begins at the parking lot and follows the base of the Pinnacle. It is an easy but super pretty trek and it is the perfect hike for beginners and small kids. Beautiful views of the valley are visible from various locations along the way.

  • Summit Overlook

TIME TO COMPLETE: 15 Minutes

This is not necessarily a hike per-se but more of a short walk from the parking lot to the viewing area at the top of the mountain. If you are not looking to get a hike in or are unable for some reason but will still like to enjoy scenic views this trail is for you. It begins at the parking lot and follows a little path that leads to a large boulder from where you will get some of the best views around as well as a view of Pilot Mountain Pinnacle. There are several such lookouts located near the parking lot from which views of the valley are visible on a clear day.

On your way back from Pilot Mountain make sure to make a stop at Divine Llama Vineyard and enjoy a glass of red or white with the Llamas.

The trail begins at the large parking lot right across the Price Lake. There is another Boone Fork Trail that is a little further down the road on the Blue Ridge Parkway so make sure to put the right directions in your GPS. We have a full article on the trail HERE.

This hike is great for beginners as well . We used to come here when the kids were younger couple of times a month and our littles enjoyed the hike every single time. It is short and flat trek and so very beautiful. It loops around Julian Price Lake following a path snug between azalea and rhododendrons with occasional mountain views through the shrubs. It is gorgeous in the fall and spring. If kayaking is your thing bring your own and take a ride or rent one here and enjoy the scenery from the lake.

LENGTH: 1.6 Miles

TIME TO COMPLETE: 1 Hour

DIFFICULTY: EASY

A little further down on the Blue Ridge Parkway you will find one of the most beautiful and highly trafficked waterfalls on the Parkway. The hike here is short and pretty easy with a slight incline to the top overlook for the falls. The trail begins at the parking lot and brings you to the first overlook where you can see the bottom of the falls and then continues up the road to the top overlook from where you will get a real good view of the falls.

Another hike here brings you to the gorge and to where the falls create a pool and give you a good view of the Chimneys. The trail is 1.4 miles long and begins at the Visitor Center following a path through the woods with lots of obstacles along the way. This trail is for more advanced hikers and we wouldn’t recommend it to beginner hikers and small children.

Crabtree Falls
Crabtree Falls

DISTANCE FROM CHARLOTTE: 2 Hours and 10 Minutes

LENGTH: 2.6 Miles

TIME TO COMPLETE: .1 Hour 30 Minutes

DIFFICULTY: Moderate

This is one of the most spectacular waterfalls on The Blue Ridge Parkway and a must if you are a waterfall lover. The beauty of this area is hard to describe and you will have to see it for yourself to believe it. The trek follows a narrow often wet path through the woods with a consistent decline before bringing you to the bottom of the falls and then bringing you back the same way straight up. The hike is so very worth it and we couldn’t recommend it enough.

#23 CUMBERLAND KNOB GAP and GULLY CREEK LOOP TRAIL

LENGTH: 2.2 Miles

TIME TO COMPLETE: 2 Hours and 20 Minutes

DIFFICULTY: HARD

This trail is for the experienced hikers. It begins at the parking lot and follows a narrow (at places very narrow path) through the woods. We suggest you take right from the parking lot and do the hike counter clockwise as that would be the easier way.  Prepare for a lot of creek crossing and getting wet. The trail is shaded for most part and does stay wet and slippery. It is a challenging one and does not offer views just several small waterfalls along the way but it is a great exercise and is sure to get your heart rate going. The best part about this trail is that it is so very little trafficked that you will most likely have it all to yourself and would enjoy the piece and tranquility of Nature fully here. Make sure to check for Park closures before heading this way. The Cumberland Gap parking lot is closed during the winter months.

#24 CHIMNEY ROCK STATE PARK

DISTANCE TO CHARLOTTE: 1 Hour and 50 Minutes

There are so many trails you can pick from here but we will like to share our top 2 that are a must if you chose Chimney Rock State Park for your next visit.

  • Exclamation Point to Skyline Trail to the top of Hickory Nut Falls

LENGTH: 2.8 Miles

TIME TO COMPLETE: 2 Hour

DIFFICULTY: Moderate

Taking this trail would bring you pass and through the best parts of the Park. The trail starts at the parking lot following the 500 stairs up to the top of the rock formation that is the Chimney Rock. There you will have a beautiful view of the valley and Lake Lure. Continue following the path pass the the Subway, Devil Head formation and finally the stairs to the Skyline Trails. Continue on from here to the Exclamation Point for some more lovely views before heading in the woods on the path that will lead you to the top of the falls. It is a moderate hike with the stairs at the beginning being the hardest part.

  • Hickory Nut Falls

LENGTH: 1.5 Miles

TIME TO COMPLETE: 45 Minutes

DIFFICULTY: EASY

This trail is another good one for beginner hikers. An easy leisure walk in the woods under tall trees leads to a 404 foot tall waterfall that was ones features in the movie ” The Last of The Mohicans”. The hike is perfect for little kids with lot of rocks to skip and wild flowers and plants to look at. Benches along the way offer a great spot for a short rest and a snack break.

Stop by the town for a lunch by the river or a little shopping at any of the little downtown shops.

We would not recommend this trail to beginner hikers and small children. The hike starts at the parking lot and goes straight uphill. Ones at the top you will have a chance to get a pretty good look of the massive Falls. They are beautiful and flow pretty hard after a good rain.

DIFFICULTY: Moderate

Looking for hike that would bring you to the best views in North Carolina? This is it! Make sure to come here early as the parking lot is not very big and does get full. The road leading to the trailhead is dirt road for about 5 miles so take this in consideration before heading this way. The trail begins at the parking lot following a well marked path waving between rhododendron and mountain laurel shrubs. The hike is especially beautiful in Spring and Fall but no matter the season you decide to visit this trail the views never disappoint.

#30 UPPER CREEK FALLS TRAIL

Upper Creek Falls
Upper Creek Falls

DISTANCE FROM CHARLOTTE: 1 Hour and 50 Minutes

LENGTH: 1.5 Miles

TIME TO COMPLETE: 1 Hour 30 Minutes

DIFFICULTY: Moderate

The sign on the information board for this hike says that this is the hardest hike in Pisgah National Forest and if you decide to do it clockwise it would definitely feel like it. We suggest you take right at the parking lot and do it counter clockwise which would save you a lot of leg burn. Otherwise the tail is gorgeous and you will have the pleasure to see and swim in (if you choose so) in a handful of waterfalls. This is one of the best swimming holes in North Carolina and you will not be disappointed by what this trail has to offer.

TRAIL GUIDE: Catawba Falls near Asheville https://travelbugged.net/easy-hike-to-breathtaking-falls-near-asheville-nc-catawba-falls/ https://travelbugged.net/easy-hike-to-breathtaking-falls-near-asheville-nc-catawba-falls/#respond Sat, 24 Apr 2021 20:15:26 +0000 https://travelbugged.net/?p=12100 UPDATED MAY 2022

Catawba Falls is closed for major repairs and will remain closed through the spring of 2023. For more information please check HERE.

Catawba Falls located in Old Ford, North Carolina is possibly one of the best waterfalls in the state. The close proximity to Asheville, Morganton and Marion helps as well. If you are driving on I-40 towards the Great Smokies in Tennessee or driving back from TN on your way to Charlotte this trail would also be your best choice to get out of your car and stretch your legs.

What we love about this hike in particular outside of it being so close to home is how easy, well marked and very well maintained the trail is which makes it the perfect hike to bring the kids and pets along and how beautiful the 100 foot moss covered waterfall is no matter the season.

We finally decided to mention Catawba Falls on our blog after multiple people asked us what is our favorite hike near Asheville this past week. And although we come here often we decided to make a special trip and check out the trail again just to ensure that everything is exactly as we remember it before sharing it with you.

Taken into consideration the recent popularity on the North Carolina Trails, we were able to find a parking spot easily and without having to wait a minute. The parking lot was pretty full but people were coming in and out at a steady flow and even on a warm Friday afternoon it didn’t seem too packed.

To reach the falls after taking the exit on I-40 turn right on Catawba River Road and follow the road for 3 miles. Slight left to stay on Catawba River Rd. pass the campground for 50 feet before reaching the Trailhead and parking.

The Trail starts right at the parking lot to the right of the bathroom facilities and information board. The information board gives great details on the flora and fauna, the wildlife, the fish that swims in the river and some history of this part of Pisgah National Forest.

The short and pretty easy 1.2 mile trek took us about an hour with multiple stops for rock climbing by our littles and crossings of the stream back and forth for as many times as they were allowed to before our patience would vanish. If you are wondering about bringing kids on this hike don’t think twice. It’s an easy trail with pretty slim incline, the path is wide and allows plenty of separation from the other hikers on the trail and as long as you are keeping a close eye on them you should be fine. Only few spots where you’ll be close to the edge might get you worried but if you walk closer to the other side all will be good.

Several old structures standing by the side of the trail could be explored as long as you are close and aware and don’t go close to the edge. The bridges you’ll be crossing are sturdy and safe and a great fun for little feet.

Catawba Falls. Old Fort, North Carolina

There are multiple opportunities to break off the trail and sidetrack to a spot by the stream where kids can splash and you can enjoy the sound of the rushing water, singing birds, read a book, finish your coffee or enjoy a picnic. We did and found some great cascades before reaching the main Falls.

Catawba Falls. Old Fort, North Carolina Catawba Falls. Old Fort, North Carolina Catawba Falls. Old Fort, North Carolina

The last part before Catawba Falls is the most strenuous requiring some rock climbing and tree roots navigating but the view before you is worth every step. The massive falls is straight out of a fairytale like with the water flowing between the moss dressed rocks before dropping into a shallow pool at the bottom, perfect for splashing on a hot summer day. Our littles look forward this part every time we visit here.

There are multiple opportunities to break off the trail and sidetrack to a spot by the stream where kids can splash and you can enjoy the sound of the rushing water, singing birds, read a book, finish your coffee or enjoy a picnic. We did and found some great cascades before reaching the main Falls.

If you are really adventures a trip to the Upper Catawba Falls might be for you. However we have to worn you that in order to reach them you will have to do some climbing that might not be easy or safe. So consider the risk before heading up the trail and make sure you can do it. The treacherous downpours last year ate up quite a bit of the trail and the rope that was previously there to help the climb is not available any longer. If you choose to make the short trek to the top of the falls the trail is located to the right of Catawba Falls going straight up. Ones at the top you’ll be greeted with a completely different perspective of the falls. The trail to the upper falls is not suitable for pets or kids so keep them no further than the Lower Catawba Falls.

There are multiple opportunities to break off the trail and sidetrack to a spot by the stream where kids can splash and you can enjoy the sound of the rushing water, singing birds, read a book, finish your coffee or enjoy a picnic. We did and found some great cascades before reaching the main Falls.

Catawba Falls Trail is great for four legged friends and they would highly appreciate cooling off in the clean spring waters however make sure to keep them a leash at all times as you should in all North Carolina Parks.

If you’ve worked out an appetite after the hike we highly suggest a stop at the Hillman Brewery in town. This brewery has two locations one in Old Ford and one in Asheville and if you are a lover of good beer you won’t regret visiting them both. This small family owned establishment brings pub style back to the brewery experience. If you tried their beer and loved it you must try their food. The pimento cheese dip and their wings are delicious and the perfect snack for after the hike. The location is the best. The massive, wide open construction has ample seating some of which outdoors by the river. There are fans blowing cool air in the summer to keep you refreshed.

Hillman Brewing, Old Fort

Hillman Brewing, Old Fort

If you are looking to spend the night in Old Fort check out the Catawba Campground. This waterfront campground offers miles of river frontage for your fishing and camping needs. The sites are large enough to spread and not be close to anyone or close enough to make new friends if that’s what you are looking for. The site does get busy so make sure to make a reservation ahead of your arrival.

If camping isn’t your thing check out the Airbnb’s available in the area. There are a lot of them you can choose from and suitable for any liking. We love the ones next to the Hillman Brewing as they are close enough to the falls, the brewery and town and perfect for a family of four. Here is a link to them.

In search of other things to do in the area? Morganton and Asheville are within an hour or so drive away and have a lot to offer. From dinning and hiking, to wineries and breweries you will not be short of options. Check out our website and follow us on INSTAGRAM to find more ideas. We look forward to seeing you on the trails.

Hidden Gem: Wolf Rock Trail at Stone Mountain State Park in North Carolina https://travelbugged.net/hidden-gem-wolf-rock-trail-at-stone-mountain-state-park-in-north-carolina/ https://travelbugged.net/hidden-gem-wolf-rock-trail-at-stone-mountain-state-park-in-north-carolina/#respond Tue, 23 Mar 2021 13:41:06 +0000 https://travelbugged.net/?p=12006 If you love hiking as much as we do, Stone Mountain State Park in North Carolina should definitely be on your bucket list. With a wide variety of trails suitable for every level this state park has it all. The park has an abundance of wildlife, a handful of waterfalls and stunning views. A well preserved and maintained Homestead sitting at the bottom of the massive rock formation is also a top attraction.

If you want to read more about the main trails in the park check out our other article on the website that gives details on that however today we would like to share a less popular trail in the park that we have recently discovered and thoroughly enjoyed exploring.

Wolf Rock Trail begins at the lower parking lot. Ample parking is available right by the bathroom facilities and large map is located there that has a list of trails and descriptions. Follow the main trail that splits several times (see pictures bellow) before reaching the sign pointing right where the Wolf Rock Trail begins.

The Wolf Rock trail is about 2.5 miles and a moderate hike with slight inclines but certainly not strenuous. The first part after turning right by the sign is the steepest with straight incline for about .2 miles before it switches to gradual incline for about .5 miles and than flattens up. It’s an absolutely stunning hike between the large trees especially in the fall and spring months.  Watch out for roots and rocks and keep your eyes open for deer that often graze by the side of the path. The trail is very well marked, greatly maintained and super easy to follow.

Wolf Rock Trail, Stone Mountain NC

A short while after passing by the stone wall that sits by the side of the trail you’ll come about another sign pointing right. If you choose to follow it you’ll find yourself before magnificent views of the Blue Ridge Mountains. That is the perfect spot for a short break and picnic if you choose to pack and bring one. For all the times we have hiked this trail we have never encountered another hiker and have had this spot all to ourselves.

Heading back to the trail follow the path that passes by the abandoned building sitting still in the woods hugged between the trees. If you are looking to extend your hike take the Blackjack trail that would add 4.4 miles to your trip. If not take a left and follow the Cedar Rock trail that brings you to a different point view of the Stone Mountain. If you are lucky you’ll be able to see people rock climbing the massive rock. Sit there for a moment and try to spot the tiny figures in the distance.

Once you pass by here follow the trail that goes essentially straight downhill before connecting to the main trail.  If you are just doing the Wolf Rock trail turn left at the bottom and continue on the trail pass the homestead and back to the  parking lot. If you choose to extend the distance turn right and head over to the falls or even to the whole loop. Again you can read more about these trails in our other Stone Mountain article that covers these trails in greater details.

wolf Rock Trail, Stone Mountain NC

Whichever way or trail you choose to do we wish you happy trails and hope you enjoy this special spot as much as we have and make lasting memories with family and friends! #HappyTrails

Is Upper Creek Falls Near Morganton The Best Swimming Hole in the State? https://travelbugged.net/is-upper-creek-falls-near-morganton-the-best-swimming-hole-in-the-state/ https://travelbugged.net/is-upper-creek-falls-near-morganton-the-best-swimming-hole-in-the-state/#respond Sat, 12 Dec 2020 13:13:44 +0000 https://travelbugged.net/?p=11861 We first spotted the sign for Upper Creek Falls on our way to Hawksbill Mountain and had to return and explore the area. Morganton is one of our absolutely favorite small towns in the state and we often find ourselves heading this way. It’s not only a short pleasant drive from Charlotte but has such wide variety of trails, it is so close to the Blue Ridge and the town itself is so charming that it’s no wonder why we love it so much.

We typically pack a picnic to take with us whenever heading to the mountains since there is always a scenic spot to sit and enjoy it.  After discovering Mountain Burrito in town however, now that has changed. We now make a stop every time we find ourselves in the vicinity of Morganton and grab lunch there. If you are anything like us and like burritos and bowls this little hidden gem is a must. I promise you won’t regret it and would most likely just like us find any and every excuse to stop by and treat yourself.

The day we went to Upper Creek Falls we did just that. Grabbed lunch and than followed the NC Highway 181 to the spectacular Pisgah National Forest and to the entrance to the trail. Roads are windy although wide and you’ll be continuously climbing up before seeing the sign for the Falls on your right if coming from the town of Morganton.

Upper Creek Falls, Morganton, NC

The parking is located right before the entrance sign to your right. Follow the dirt road for a short bit. If you come on a weekend day the lot might be full especially during the warm summer days. That was the case when we visited so we had to find a safe spot to the side of the road just like many others we notice have done. A map of the trail is located near the beginning of the trail.

Upper Creek Falls, Morganton, NC

From the parking lot we fund ourselves with two options. We could go left or right since the trail is a loop. We decided to take the path to the left and I’m so glad we did. We hike with two small kids (6 and 9 at the time) and this hike is not for the faint of heart. It goes straight down and than straight back up following very well maintained large smooth path. Be watchful for the roots, slippery rocks and low branches along the way. Bring plenty of water and wear proper shoes.

We reached the wooden bridge after about 0.4 miles going downhill, climbed on the large boulders pass some people and were rewarded with the view of the Falls. I would have to say this might be one of our top 10 waterfalls in NC when it comes to size and beauty. It was splendid and so full even on this hot summer day, coming down crushing over the rock before filling the pool at the bottom perfectly framed by the greenery surrounding it.

The Falls appeared to be a popular spot for tourist and locals but don’t let this deter you from coming. There are plenty of spots for social distancing and everyone was very considerate, allowing personal space.

We found a good spot in the shade right by the water and let the kids splash, swim in the pool at the bottom of the falls, sled down them and even jump off the rope to the side of the waterfall. They spent hours going back and fourth, taking little water and snack breaks before returning to their water activities. We easily could’ve spend an entire day here but there was a long way back and we needed them to have some energy and be able to make it to the car.

The way back was not easy. Terrain is pretty difficult, there are several creek crossings and the last part is straight uphill. We took multiple breaks marveling at the many waterfalls along the way back and taking notes on where we can splash in next time we visit. We saw other groups of people sliding down the cascades we passed which looked equally as fun as the Upper Falls. If you come earlier and give yourself plenty time make sure to check them out as well.

The Newest Trail at South Mountains State Park – Big Bear Falls https://travelbugged.net/the-newest-trail-at-south-mountains-state-park-big-bear-falls/ https://travelbugged.net/the-newest-trail-at-south-mountains-state-park-big-bear-falls/#respond Wed, 09 Dec 2020 20:07:29 +0000 https://travelbugged.net/?p=11718 We absolutely love South Mountains State Park and all the different trails that can be explored there. Wtih the variation of terrain and all of the hiking options, one can never get bored whichever path they choose along the 40 miles of equestrians, running, horse riding and mountain biking trails.

This past week we picked an overcast Friday and departed early in the morning in hopes to avoid crowds and beat the rain. Chasing waterfalls on rainy days is the best and South Mountain State Park is the perfect spot to enjoy lots and lots of them.

Our plan as per usual was to do the High Shoals Falls Trail (you can read more about it here) so we set on the trek to it. It wasn’t long before we reached the first foot bridge crossing the river and realized that there was a new trail created that we hadn’t seen before. We knew work had been done there as we saw signs earlier in the year that stated that a “New Trail is Coming” but no more details were provided.

The sign pointed right towards a waving cleared narrow path that followed the river from high above it. The trail is only 0.2 miles long but pretty steep. Multiple cascades were visible now that there are no leaves on the trees,  some of which pretty good in size.

Our kids were impressed with the massive round Boulder sitting by the side of the river that had a split to the side and looked like a ball that a giant had kicked from the top of the mountain.

We quickly reached the Big Bear Falls and were stunned by the size of it. The waterfall would make a spectacular swimming hole in the summer and the water was so clear, the bottom of the pool that was created by the rushing waters was fully visible.

We let the kids jump around the rocks surrounding the falls for some time before taking the path back to the trail leading to the High Shoals Trail and completing the loop right on time before the skies opened and rain came crashing down.

We made sure to stop along the way and admire all the beautiful cascades and the three large waterfalls and even had time for a quick snack on the picnic bench  by the last falls.

On our way back to Charlotte from South Mountains State Park we passed by the newest brewery in Lincolnton, NC (BrickTree Brewing) which we highly recommend. Their Double IPA is so tasty and so well deserved after the million stairs to the top of the park.
