(This message was added in version 6.7.0.) in /home2/wallsler/travelbugged.net/wp-includes/functions.php on line 6131Update 5/24/2023: Davidson Ice House will be reopening under a new name Hot Mess and hopefully similar menu in the near future.
Number one and our top choice to get a vegetarian meal is Davidson Ice House located in the town of Davidson (as the name suggests) at 416 S Main St, Davidson, NC 28036.. Their phone number is (704) 895-5555 in case you want to place an online or to go order. They do deliver.
Their menu is absolutely fantastic and they offer a wide variety of vegan, vegetarian and gluten free options. You can choose anything from salads and bowls to burgers and desserts. And everything is prepared daily from mostly locally grown produce in the kitchen in the back. The owner and chef Jen Brule is kind of celebrity ( she did indeed appear on a celebrity cooking show – The Ultimate Thanksgiving Challenge on Food Network) and is the one that inspired the dishes and cooked them to perfection before offering them to you. She’s written two very popular cook books so it’s safe to say she knows what she’s doing.

You can choose to build your own salad, bowl or burger or choose one of the daily suggestions that chef Jenny has to offer if you don’t feel like having to make a quick decision. Some of the things you can pick from are quinoa, kale, grilled slow, caramelized sweet potatoes, lemon pickled cauliflower, vegan chicken, kale slow, edamame, caramelized onion, a variety of chopped veggies and so much more. Our favorites are the crunchy mushrooms, the buffalo cauliflower, the sidewinder fries with the pimento cheese and black bean hummus over lettuce and quinoa. All of their sauces are out of this world so we can really not say which one is our favorite. You can pick several with your order so we suggest if you are a group order one of each.

The brick building that Davidson Ice House is located in is kind of a mix of old and new. It used to be the old ice house of the town (hence the name) build back in 1922 and constructed and equipped by the Southern Ice Machine Factory of Charlotte. The building had changed hands multiple times throughout the years before finally becoming one of the most beloved restaurants in town today and you can definitely feel all of that in the charming building. You can sit inside or choose a sit at the front of the restaurant or on their back patio. Either way you will be sure to be graced by southern hospitality and southern soul food that will leave you wishing for more and have you coming back time after time.
Cava is another absolute favorite of ours that we (and I’m embarrassed to admit this) order at least once a week. Believe me if you try it you will understand. And we highly recommend you give them a go.
Cava restaurant is located in Birkdale village at 16845 Birkdale Commons Pkwy in Huntersville, NC. You can order in the restaurant or place an order online. You can also give them a call and place an order over the phone. Their phone number is 704-464-0614.
CAVA was started by three friends one of which was a chef. All of them were in some way involved with the Greek culture and had dinners around the table involving Mediterranean food. So they took notes and decided to bring the taste of Greece to you. Their initial restaurant can be traced back to Rockville, Maryland where it all started. Today they have about 80 chef inspired locations around the US and some of their products ( like the hummus they make, which is heavenly) can be purchased in various stores around the country.
Their concept is pretty simple. You can order a bowl or a pita. Just like Davidson Ice House you can build your own ( awesome, right! ) or pick one that they recommend. You start with the base which could be either salad, greens or grain and than add as you go. Some of the items you can pick from are falafel , spicy lamb meatballs, harissa honey chicken, roasted vegetables, grilled chicken, grilled meatballs or braised lamb. Next you pick a dip. We absolutely love the crazy feta which is a just the right of spicy for our taste and the tzatziki ( no way we can do without that). There is also red roasted pepper hummus, harissa, roasted eggplant dip and just regular hummus. The toppings is where the fun begins. There are so many options you can choose from and you can add as many as you would like. Our favorites are the pickled onion, the cabbage slow, the Kalamata olives, the tabbouleh lentil and the oven roasted corn. Once you’ve chosen your toppings you can pick a dressing. There are about 10 toppings you can pick from and they are all absolutely divine. We’ll hold off on recommending any of them since we usually pick as we go depending on what we feel like that day.

If instead of the bowl you have decided to order the Pita just follow the same steps. There is a good amount of sitting inside the restaurant as well as some outside tables right to the side of the building and in front of it. We like the side sitting where it is usually quiet and warm in the winter thanks to the plastic covering.
Fresh Chef is another great option if you are looking to grab a vegetarian meal and the best part is that the restaurant has 3 locations around Lake Norman so you are never too far from one of them. There is one in Cornelius at 20601 Torrence Chapel Road, one in Mooresville at 645 Brawley School Road and one in Denver at 179 Cross Center Road.
Their house smoked salmon with fresh herb aioli is delicious. The pimento and fresh guacamole, topped with Pico de Gallo and served with corn chips is always on point and the creamy spinach, with jalapenos, tender artichokes and melted cheeses melts in your mouth. All of their salads can be ordered without meat and are outstanding. The herb marinated Portobello mushroom topped with roasted red pepper, feta cheese, red onion and lettuce, finished with a balsamic glaze on a brioche bun is pretty much always our go to and it has always been mouthwatering although their salmon dishes tease us very often and we end up with one of them just so we can share.

We love Pinky’s and the the atmosphere at this spot. It is so laid back and kind of homie and the staff is so very friendly. They run drink specials all the time and even if you are not feeling like a big meal they have a good selection of small plates to share or snack on while chatting away with your company.
They have a soup of the day which is always prepared fresh, homemade veggie chili, homemade fries topped with homemade pimento cheese ( you can substitute for vigan) , fried dill pickles, white bean and rosemary hummus that is so good. They have a very good selection of salads and all of them can be made to be vegetarian. But what is our favorite item on their menu is the Nature Boy ( a homemade veggie burger, deep fried, topped with pepper jack, red onion, tomato and lettuce and served with their yummy chipotle-mayonnaise on a toasted whole wheat bun. Our second favorite is the one and only -Charlotte’s first vegetarian hot dog but you can order anything from their wiener wonderland section and substitute with a veggie hotdog that is 100% plant- based and is always boiled.
There are about 10 sandwiches on their menu you can pick from. One of the best ones are the grilled Greek pita sandwich with provolone, fetta, Kalamata olives and oregano as well as the falafel sandwich which will definitely transport you to Greece.
Pinky’s Westside Grill has two locations. There is one in Huntersville at 9818 Gilead Road Suite 101B and one in Charlotte at 1600 W Morehead St.

#5 Killington’s Restaurant and Pub
Killington’s is located in Huntersville at 10010 Rose Commons Dr. They have a second location in Fort Mill in SC at 940 Market St.
Killington is one of our favorite casual date day or date night spots and we frequent it very often. they have a good amount of sitting inside and several tables outside. We love the chill atmospheres here and the friendly stuff. The food is always quick to arrive and always cooked perfectly.
I have a slight obsession with pretzels and Killington’s has probably one of the best pretzels in the are ( and I know my pretzels) In the many years we have ventured to restaurants around I am yet to find one that I like as much. The pimento cheese sred and spicy mustard it comes with are divine and the size of its is bigger than my head ( literally).

If a pretzel isn’t your thing all of their salads are amazing and always on point. Their pepperjack spinach dip melts in your mouth, the toasted ravioli are outstanding and the stuffed banana peppers are fire. But the black bean burger stack is where it’s at. The perfectly cooked black bean burger is served in pita bread and comes with avocado pepper jack cheese, tomato, lettice and red onion. It is a must if you are here. If you are looking for something lighter their soups are great as well and they typically have a soup of the day cooked daily.
Brixx pizza in Birkdale located at 16915 Birkdale Commons Pkwy. is another great option for a quick casual food grab. They have multiple locations around the state and beyond and often run deals if that is something that interests you. Sign to their reward program and get a small pizza immediately upon ordering another item. This way you will get the chance to check out several of their dishes before making a decision if they will be a regular dinner or lunch spot for you. On Tuesdays they often offer buy one get one as well so that’s a good time to plan a visit here.

We love all of their pizzas and salads. Most of them you can just request to have meatless and all of them are delicious. We like to sit at the bar and have a drink if we are on a date here or grab a boot and enjoy the laud mess if we are bringing the kids with us. We often take the kids however since they absolutely love this place ( as do all the other kids that we have seen around) and if there was a chart somewhere we would probably rate Brixx Pizza at the top of it for family friendly restaurants in the area. It is also very hard not to like this spot since what they offer as desert is the marshmallow smores pizza which our kids drool over.

]]>Each year this one neighborhood just North of Charlotte, NC gets all decked out and totally impresses us with their thoughtful ways and each year we count down the days before they put their insanely amazing decoration up for all of us Christmas lovers to enjoy.

We have created a map for you to follow around this neighborhood so you can fully enjoy this spectacular Christmas display and get the absolute best of this experience. Grab a hot chocolate and your ugly Christmas sweater, blast the Christmas music in your car and get ready to enjoy some of the best Christmas lights around.
We suggest you plan on at least an hour for the trip (more if you choose to park and actually listen to the synchronized music and watch the lights dance). Hot chocolate, warm decaf coffee for yourself or a candy cane for the young ones would be a great way to keep them occupied while moving from one house to another. Christmas snack to munch on would also be great for kids and adults alike.
The Christmas lights get put up just after Thanksgiving typically and stay on until Christmas. Please check the weather before planning a visit as they would not be on if it is raining or snowing, so make sure to pick a good weather day. If you choose to walk around the neighborhood which is perfectly acceptable and accessible bring a warm jacket with you or look at the forecast and choose a warmer night to do so. The lights are best seen in the dark so plan to get here after 5.30PM.
If you are coming from the direction of Charlotte, Mooresville, Cornelius, Huntersville or Kannapolis the first stop you would like to put in the GPS would be 14904 Carbert Lane in Huntersville, North Carolina.

Once you exit the highway follow the GPS to your first and most impressive stop. The house before you upon arriving at the MacCaulay Neighborhood is straight out of a movie. Located on the corner of Carbert Lane and Sagefield Drive this elaborately decorated home gets better and better each and every year. Lights of every kind are galore, the backyard is bright and festive, the large Merry Christmas sign to the side of the house is perfect for your Christmas card background and the Christmas lights tunnel is our kids favorite. They would walk through it back and forth and back and forth millions of times if I let them.
You can just drive by or park your car and look at the lights from inside or you can park by the side of the street without disturbing the neighborhood traffic and take a look at all the decorations up close. Take a walk through the tunnel and take your Christmas picture by the large Christmas sign. Have a little laugh at the neighbors sign that would totally make your day and have you smiling for a very long time.

Once done here punch in your next destination. The address for the following Christmas lights stop is 15038 Hugh McAuley. While driving through the neighborhood you would be greeted by pretty much every house decorated in different lights, inflatables and decorations and each of them more impressive than the one before it . The trees are wrapped in lights as well blinking as you pass them and creating the effect as if you are passing through a tunnel of lights.
An impressive lightshow awaits you right at the front of the Hugh McAuley house. Again park safely by the side of the road making sure neighborhood traffic can pass by and enjoy the show. Make sure to tune in to the radio station that would be shown to you at the front of the house to be able to hear the sound of the music accompanying the lights . If you happen to stop by here on a warm December day come out of the car and have yourself a little dance.

Next and last stop in the neighborhood is 15038 Hugh McAuley Road just down the street from where you were. An expansive decoration in front of the house consistent of large Christmas inflatables, Christmas wreaths and singing Christmas trees combined with a little Christmas light tunnel surrounding the sidewalk is what awaits you here. A sign with the radio station you can tune in to in your car is located to the right side of the house and there are various songs the Christmas trees are singing to for your delight. We highly recommend you park here and enjoy the show.

There are so many other houses wonderfully decorated around the MaCaulay neighborhood so make sure to take a drive around and look at them all. Bellow we have several pictures of just few of them that you would encounter on your drive.

If you arrive in Huntersville before dark and need to pass some time check out Birkdale Village just down the road from Macaulay neighborhood and the Santa Shop where you can meet and greet the jolly old man and take a picture with him. If you decide to do that you will need to make an appointment before arriving. For more information check the link HERE. If that is more than what you are interested in doing just walk around and look at their wonderful Christmas decoration and the Christmas tree right behind the temporary Santa Shop.
If pottery paining is your cup of tea check out Meg-art Pottery Studio located right across from the MaCaulay neighborhood. You do not need to make an appointment in order to visit the shop. Walk ins are welcome. The studio is open Monday to Thursday 12PM-8PM, Friday 12PM-12AM, Saturday 12PM-8PM and Sunday 1PM-5PM. If you want to paint a pottery piece (there are hundred to choose from) but don’t have time to do it in store you can pop in and choose a piece to take and paint at home.
If you forgot your hot chocolate or coffee at home there is a Starbucks shop right in Birkdale Village. If you are looking to grab a dinner after you have enjoyed the lights there are several options less than 5 minutes away from the neighborhood.
Once finished with your dinner grab a desert at Kilwins, a movie at the theater or finish your Christmas shopping by visiting any of the many stores in Birkdale Village.

]]>Catawba Falls is closed for major repairs and will remain closed through the spring of 2023. For more information please check HERE.
Catawba Falls located in Old Ford, North Carolina is possibly one of the best waterfalls in the state. The close proximity to Asheville, Morganton and Marion helps as well. If you are driving on I-40 towards the Great Smokies in Tennessee or driving back from TN on your way to Charlotte this trail would also be your best choice to get out of your car and stretch your legs.
What we love about this hike in particular outside of it being so close to home is how easy, well marked and very well maintained the trail is which makes it the perfect hike to bring the kids and pets along and how beautiful the 100 foot moss covered waterfall is no matter the season.
We finally decided to mention Catawba Falls on our blog after multiple people asked us what is our favorite hike near Asheville this past week. And although we come here often we decided to make a special trip and check out the trail again just to ensure that everything is exactly as we remember it before sharing it with you.
Taken into consideration the recent popularity on the North Carolina Trails, we were able to find a parking spot easily and without having to wait a minute. The parking lot was pretty full but people were coming in and out at a steady flow and even on a warm Friday afternoon it didn’t seem too packed.
View this post on Instagram
To reach the falls after taking the exit on I-40 turn right on Catawba River Road and follow the road for 3 miles. Slight left to stay on Catawba River Rd. pass the campground for 50 feet before reaching the Trailhead and parking.
The Trail starts right at the parking lot to the right of the bathroom facilities and information board. The information board gives great details on the flora and fauna, the wildlife, the fish that swims in the river and some history of this part of Pisgah National Forest.

The short and pretty easy 1.2 mile trek took us about an hour with multiple stops for rock climbing by our littles and crossings of the stream back and forth for as many times as they were allowed to before our patience would vanish. If you are wondering about bringing kids on this hike don’t think twice. It’s an easy trail with pretty slim incline, the path is wide and allows plenty of separation from the other hikers on the trail and as long as you are keeping a close eye on them you should be fine. Only few spots where you’ll be close to the edge might get you worried but if you walk closer to the other side all will be good.
Several old structures standing by the side of the trail could be explored as long as you are close and aware and don’t go close to the edge. The bridges you’ll be crossing are sturdy and safe and a great fun for little feet.

There are multiple opportunities to break off the trail and sidetrack to a spot by the stream where kids can splash and you can enjoy the sound of the rushing water, singing birds, read a book, finish your coffee or enjoy a picnic. We did and found some great cascades before reaching the main Falls.

The last part before Catawba Falls is the most strenuous requiring some rock climbing and tree roots navigating but the view before you is worth every step. The massive falls is straight out of a fairytale like with the water flowing between the moss dressed rocks before dropping into a shallow pool at the bottom, perfect for splashing on a hot summer day. Our littles look forward this part every time we visit here.

If you are really adventures a trip to the Upper Catawba Falls might be for you. However we have to worn you that in order to reach them you will have to do some climbing that might not be easy or safe. So consider the risk before heading up the trail and make sure you can do it. The treacherous downpours last year ate up quite a bit of the trail and the rope that was previously there to help the climb is not available any longer. If you choose to make the short trek to the top of the falls the trail is located to the right of Catawba Falls going straight up. Ones at the top you’ll be greeted with a completely different perspective of the falls. The trail to the upper falls is not suitable for pets or kids so keep them no further than the Lower Catawba Falls.

Catawba Falls Trail is great for four legged friends and they would highly appreciate cooling off in the clean spring waters however make sure to keep them a leash at all times as you should in all North Carolina Parks.
If you’ve worked out an appetite after the hike we highly suggest a stop at the Hillman Brewery in town. This brewery has two locations one in Old Ford and one in Asheville and if you are a lover of good beer you won’t regret visiting them both. This small family owned establishment brings pub style back to the brewery experience. If you tried their beer and loved it you must try their food. The pimento cheese dip and their wings are delicious and the perfect snack for after the hike. The location is the best. The massive, wide open construction has ample seating some of which outdoors by the river. There are fans blowing cool air in the summer to keep you refreshed.

If you are looking to spend the night in Old Fort check out the Catawba Campground. This waterfront campground offers miles of river frontage for your fishing and camping needs. The sites are large enough to spread and not be close to anyone or close enough to make new friends if that’s what you are looking for. The site does get busy so make sure to make a reservation ahead of your arrival.
If camping isn’t your thing check out the Airbnb’s available in the area. There are a lot of them you can choose from and suitable for any liking. We love the ones next to the Hillman Brewing as they are close enough to the falls, the brewery and town and perfect for a family of four. Here is a link to them.
In search of other things to do in the area? Morganton and Asheville are within an hour or so drive away and have a lot to offer. From dinning and hiking, to wineries and breweries you will not be short of options. Check out our website and follow us on INSTAGRAM to find more ideas. We look forward to seeing you on the trails.

If you have ever driven on Route US-321 towards Lenoir, North Carolina, you likely have seen the big hill perched in the horizon. At 2,211 feet above the surrounding topography, the Summit of Hibriten Mountain marks the western most point of the Brushy Mountain Range and is home to one of the most important fire towers in Western North Carolina.
The 5 mile hike up and back to the summit of the mountain begins at a small parking lot graciously provided for use to hikers by a private land owner. At the most there are 5-6 parking spots available so make sure to get here early especially on weekends as this is a very popular hiking and walking spot among the local college students. The parking lot specifically says no overnight parking is allowed on the premises and towing would be unforced.
After parking follow the paved road for about 200 feet before you reach the entrance to the trail. A map is located to the right of the fence and there is a little opening on the left where you can pass.
The trail is relatively wide and weaves between wooded areas and open spots. If you are hiking in the summer make sure to apply sunscreen and bring a lot of water. The incline is pretty steady and steep at times. A few shortcuts have been cut between the trees which can save you some walking but make sure that you are able to see where the other side ends, as a few of them lead nowhere.
You’ll know you are at the top of the mountain as the terrain becomes flatter. The trail leads you passed the electric tower and electricity buildings before opening to the stunning views of the valley which could best be taken in on the gliding platform.
Several rocks are conveniently located next to the platform and make for a great resting spot. Right by them is a memorial granite plaque that pays respect to the young hand glider Steve Green, who lost his life while test-flying a friend’s hand glider.

Perhaps the most impressive draw to the summit of Hibriten Mountain if not the spectacular views is the massive metal star/cross light display build in 1954 and first lit up for Christmas of the same year. Following the great success of it the Cross was lit up for Easter the following year.
Hibriten Mountain offers not only a great hang gliding opportunity, but great outdoor activity for all ages. The annual Hibriten Hill Run for children featuring a 5k and 10k race has grown in popularity in recent years bringing crowds of people from all over North Carolina supporting the great cause and challenging their skills.
We hope you’ll give this trail a go and if you do make sure to let us know how you liked it on our Facebook or Instagram Page. You can find the parking lot leading to the trail if you search Hibriten mountain, Lower Creek, NC 28645.

Located just over an hour’s drive north of Charlotte, lies this magical vineyard with a deep and storied history. The dairy farm that was formerly known as Klondike Farms is surrounded by lush greenery, nestled by the side of a pond overlooking the grape vines and welcomes you at the end of a winding gravel road. The tasting room that was once a stable is now meticulously transformed into a welcoming and beautifully decorated space. The current owners and family treat each customer as if they are part of the family and are eager to share the property history and a welcoming glass (or bottle) of red, white, sweet or dry wine.
The Vineyard offers many events list of which you can find here. Our absolute favorite way to spend a Sunday is listening to live music here while sitting outdoors sipping on delicious wine and sharing stories with friends.

If you’re looking to make a day out of it, there are several options for extending your stay or adding a hike to or from the Vineyard. The Grassy Creek Trail begins right outside the tasting room’s entrance and winds for a half a mile until it connects with the famous mountains to sea trail.
You can then take a right to head to Byrd’s Branch Campground. Just before the campground you will enter a section of the trail called the Enchanted Forest, which has interactive creatures that will intrigue adults and children alike. During the month of October the Enchanted Forest becomes Haunted with spooky ghosts and spiders hanging from the trees. It’s a great place to take the kids for a short and spooky Halloween walk.
Be sure to stop for an ice cream at Byrd’s General Store before continuing on to scenic Carter Falls. Continuing on the trail behind the store, you’ll reach the Carter Falls trail-head. From the campground to the falls is about a 1.5 mile hike. From Grassy Creek Vineyard to the campground is about three miles round-trip, making the total hike from the vineyard to the falls and back about 4.5 miles. There are several other parking options if you’re looking to shorten or lengthen the hike on the trail system. The full trail map can be found here.
Check out our full post with pictures on Carter Falls Trail here.
Bring the Kids
If a several mile hike isn’t your cup of tea, bring the whole family and head a short 5 minute walk down the Grassy Creek Trail to the creek from the winery. There is a small sandy area with benches and a picnic table. The creek is safe for splashing around on a summer’s day while adults can enjoy a bottle of award winning wine.
We rate Grassy Creek Vineyard as the most kid-friendly vineyard in Elkin based on the open spaces, welcoming staff and trails and creek to keep them entertained.
Cross the creek and take a slow walk through the first forest bathing trail in North Carolina. Follow the wooded path that leads to the Klondike Lake and rejuvenate in the peace and quiet of the forest surrounding you. Take a sit on one of the benches along the way and just listen to the chirping birds. Close your eyes and bask in the sunrays picking through the leaves. Turn off your phone and forget your worries for a bit before returning to your everyday with a lighter heart.
If you are spending longer than a day in the area check out Stone Mountain State Park for a longer hike to the falls or the summit, the homestead or for rock climbing if that is something that interest you.
]]>Rainy weather in the forecast ahead in the week has you all flustered? Having young kids and wondering how to keep them entertained without loosing your mind stuck in the house? Have older kids that need to get out of the house with friends but not sure where to go? Lake Norman have so many great spots to get the crazies out and have some fun. Below we’ve created a list of top places to head to if the weather is not looking good or if you need an indoor place to go to no matter the reason.
#1 Discovery Kids, Huntersville NC
Discovery Kids Museum in Huntersville has to be number one on our list while thinking of fun places to go. That would be the first spot our kids would think of when we ask them where would they like to go when we are heading to an indoor place.
This museum is suitable for ages 0-12 in our opinion. There is a lovely always clean area right behind the corner from where you pay to enter for children 0-3. A huge climbing structure is located in the center of the museum on the first floor with slides and tunnels kids can slide and crawl through. Train table, water play, art room, underwater room with submarine and a boat, kitchen room, exercise room with climbing wall, doctors office, farm area, veterinary cabinet and store as well as a costume, science and puppet show platform are located on the first floor. Second floor has a make your own car with trek, LEGOs, airport and blocks centers.
The museum is open daily except on Mondays and offers a variety of summer camps, educational classes, exhibitions, daily shows and accommodates birthday parties.
It coast $11 for adults and children over the age of 1 to visit the Children’s Museum. Children under the age of 1 are free. We highly recommend looking into purchasing a membership is you are planning on coming more than once as we find it to be worth it. Our kids can spend an entire day here and never get bored.
#2 Spare Time Entertainment, Huntersville, NC

#22 ENJOY THE RAIN
Last but not least ENJOY THE RAIN. There is no greater joy for kids than jumping and splashing in puddles not to mentioning the benefits of getting muddy. Mud Play is important for children to develop and practice their fine and gross motor skills, increase awareness of their senses, particularly touch, improve hand/ eye coordination and develop their social and emotional skills, including taking turns and leading/following directions.
Rain Play helps with a child’s motor skills and balance ability. They will get the chance of investigating, exploring, and enjoying the slippery world. This has a different set of physical challenges from a dry world. When they are playing in the rain it helps them connect with all the weathers nature has. So get outside, get wet and leave your worries inside.
