PLEASE REMEMBER WHEN EXPLORING THE GREAT OUTDOORS
CRABTREE FALLS LOCATION:
Be aware that if you put the Crabtree Falls into your gps you will be brought to a different spot than where the entrance to the Falls is. If you find yourself passing by Emerald Village ( which we highly recommend you visit) you are on the wrong road and need to turn around ( which might prove to be difficult as the road is really narrow and turning points are impossible to find). We give this warning from experience since the first time we visited we took the wrong way which extended our trip by an hour.
The best way to find the waterfall is to put Crabtree Picnic Area or Crabtree Campground as your destination. If you are coming from the direction of Marion, I-40 and Little Switzerland the sign for the waterfall and where you need to turn will be just pass the picnic area to your left (do not turn onto the picnic area just continue on the Blue Ridge Parkway). The falls are located at Milepost 339.5.
If you are coming from the direction of Boone and Virginia the Falls Trailhead will be right before the entrance to Crabtree campground to your right. You will see the sign few miles beforehand and right before you need to turn which will help you locate the entrance to the trailhead.
Here you turn right as you exit the Blue Ridge Parkway to where you’ll find several parking spots that are as close as you could possibly get to the beginning of the trail. If you are looking to camp contact the park services and arrange for a camping spot beforehand as there is no phone signal or internet connection here. An attendant could be found at the little booth at the entrance of the Campground sometimes but I wouldn’t bank on it and definitely make prior arrangements. In addition to the 27 sites available for advance reservations, 54 campsites are available on a first come, first served basis.
The campground offers comfortable tent or RV camping, with the convenience of flush toilets, dump station, and drinking water. You can find grills, fire rings and picnic tables at each site perfect for family barbeques or late-night marshmallow roasting.
For campground inquiries, please call: 828-675-5444 (MAY – OCTOBER)
For any additional information and more ways to book a stay at any of the campsites, weather at the spot, closures and availabilities check out their PAGE.

Porta potties are on sight but we suggest if you are looking for bathroom to go to the ones at the Picnic Area, just a short drive from the Falls, where you’ll find actual restrooms which are much nicer, wider and cleaner.
TRAILHEAD:
Trailhead to the Falls can be find easily. Just go right from the parking lot and there it is. The trail is very well maintained and marked passing through gorgeous North Carolina woodland and lush greenery before reaching the main attraction – THE FALLS. The trail is considered strenuous only because of the steep decline and straight back incline.

The hike is about 2.6 miles long if you choose to do the looop and about 2 miles long if you go there and back the same way. It takes about an hour to and hour and a half depending on you pace and of course on how long you take to enjoy the view of the falls.
We highly encourage you to do the whole loop in which case you will be able to see all the different flora and fauna enhancing this area. If you decide to do so: go clockwise. This way you will be going down the steepest part of the trail to the falls first. This will also be the shortest part of the whole trek and the quickest to reach the Falls.
To continue on the loop walk to the end of the bridge at the bottom of the Falls and look for the sign saying LOOP to the right. You will find a path to follow back to the parking lot. This side of the falls is less strenuous, more flat and easier to navigate instead of having to go straight back up the trail, if you are taking the same way back that you came down on. The extra distance (if you do the loop) is only about 3/4 miles long.

FOOTWEAR:
Make sure to have proper footwear while visiting Crabtree Falls. The trail is mostly shaded snacking between the hovering tall trees that don’t allow for much sunlight and really muddy, especially after rain. The several wooden bridges you will be crossing are very slippery when wet so be sure to hold tight to the railing where there are some and walk super slow on the parts where there isn’t any. There are parts of the trail that are pretty rocky and hard to navigate so be sure to have your hiking sticks in hand as well. They might prove a little hard for your four legged friend as well which might prompt you into letting them off the leash. Please don’t do this. North Carolina strictly requires all pets be leashed at all times on the tails. And of course don’t forget your water bottle and a snack. And a snack for your buddy as well.

Several benches are located along the trail in case you need a little break or to just sit on and enjoy the surroundings. During our last visit we got caught in some light rain and I can hardly describe the joy it was to sit on the bench under the tall green trees and listen to the raindrops falling onto the leaves creating the most beautiful and serene melody. Check out our INSTAGRAM PAGE for a short reel on the experience.

At the bottom of the steep decline to your right you will find the most stunning and an absolute breathtaker – Crabtree Falls. This 70-foot magnificent wonder cascading on Big Crabtree Creek over a rockface with many small ledges, flows into a rocky pool at the bottom, before continuing under the manmade bridge, bellow where you are standing.

The Falls are the tallest single flow waterfall on the Blue Ridge Parkway and are mostly accessible between the months of May-October due to road closures, however you are able to access the waterfall if you are willing to commit to a longer hike in most cases in snowy conditions.
Originally the Falls were known as Murphy’s Falls and a small community was living nearby. They were a settlers, mostly farmers and remainings of old church and a blacksmith shop were found and believed to be part of the settlement. After the beginning of the Blue Ridge Parkway construction in 1930 the waterfall was renamed to Crabtree Falls by the National Park Service after the Big Crabtree Creek that creates it.

The absolute best part of visiting Crabtree Falls is how close to it you can get. At your own risk and of course as comfortable as you feel climbing slippery rocks while being lightly misted by water from the falls. Bring the kids and the dogs. They would love exploring.

After the hike make sure to check out the Smallest community on the Blue Ridge Parkway – Little Switzerland. The have a lovely restaurant overlooking the property and the Parkway with great food choices. During the busy days and on weekends you might have to wait for a seat but while doing so there are several little shops where you can grab a souvenir from your visit.

If you are looking to spend the night in the area but are not necessarily into camping the hotel in town is gorgeous and if you are lucky enough there might be a room available or if you a better planner than us you can call ahead of time and make a reservation.

A little ice cream and sweets shop is located right across the Inn and the parking lot if you are looking for dessert after your lunch or dinner at the restaurant. They also offer few local brews and have sits outside under the trees which are our favorites. You can have a drink while the kids eat their ice cream – could it get any better!

Let us know if you visit the falls and how you like them. And make sure to check out all of the other awesome North Carolina hikes near by we have written about on our blog. We post daily on our INSTAGRAM page where you’ll find even more adventure inspiration.

HOW TO REACH MILL SHOALS FALLS:
Please be considerate and do not park anywhere on the parking lot of the Living Waters Ministry as the Religious Retreat is Private Property. For more information in case that this is something that might interest you, check out their PAGE where you can read about their mission, events and the options for lodging.

Several parking spots can be found along the road as well as the small parking area located right by the entrance to the trail for the Falls.

From where you parked your car take left and follow the little path for about 500 feet. The trail will lead you to the base of the double waterfall – Mill Shoals and French Broad Falls. You can get pretty close to the water and get a really good picture of both the waterfalls from the large rocks at the end of the path. However please do not go anywhere near the dwelling. Dogs are allowed on the trail but need to be on a leash at all times.

The trail is very short and easy. It is not wheelchair accessible. There is not much elevation gain and it is a great trail to take the kids if you are trying to introduce them to hiking and build the love for beautiful nature and gorgeous waterfalls. if you are doing so make sure to keep them close once you reach the end of the path to avoid them falling in the water.
The double waterfalls before you that flow from different creeks and meet exactly at this point are both 15-feet high and a sight to behold. Cascading over the rocks while the water is fully flowing before meeting at a wide pool at the bottom. The waterfall next to the red dwelling is the Shoals Creek Falls and the one to the right is French Broad Falls. Together they make Mill Shoals Falls.

If those are the only two waterfalls you have come to see or don’t have too much time to wander around head back to the car the way you came. This trail is a one way trail and not a loop.
If you are looking for a longer trek however, from this spot you can continue by taking the path on your left and find several smaller waterfalls and finally the Bird Rock/Cathedral Falls at the end of a heavily wooded path. The trail is about 0.8 miles long and is relatively flat with the exception of the slight decline and incline while taking a detour from the path to reach the waterfalls along the way.

The path is shaded (which is great during the summer months) and pretty muddy especially after rain, so make sure to wear proper footwear and bring your hiking polls. There are several wooden bridges along the way which might be slippery if wet so make sure to be extremely careful on those.

Several unnamed smaller cascades can be found if you take right where you see a path along the trail and are worth exploring. The large boulders surrounding them make for the perfect sunbathing spot even on a chillier day but also mean that reptiles will be looking to catch sunshine so be aware and look around while approaching.

As you follow along the path to the Bird Rock Waterfall/Cathedral Falls you will notice a lot of wooden plates hanged on the trees with written psalms on them. This is because this spot is located on the Living Waters Ministry Private Property, which they are generously and kindly allowing public access. Living Waters encompasses 74 acres in the North Carolina wilderness, along the French Broad River in Balsam Grove. Please be considerate and understanding as they are.

At the end of the path you will be rewarded with a beautiful sight of one of the most spectacular waterfall views in North Carolina. The Bird Rock Waterfall or as the current owners of the land have renamed it to – Cathedral Falls, is a 20-foot waterfall that flows and passes right under a massive smooth rock completed with colorful sediments painting the rock face. It is an absolutely breath taker. It is one of the most unique waterfall in the State and it will be hard to find something similar to it.

It is so absolutely spectacular how the water from the falls have curved a large hole at the bottom of the massive cliff working for thousands of years and has now made it’s way right under it.

We enjoyed our visit to this waterfall immensely. We choose to visit during a weekday and in the winter to ensure we avoided the crowds and were able to find a parking spot but we assume during the Summer and Fall months it gets pretty busy and crowded and takes away from the serenity of this special spot.

A moment our kids really enjoyed and still talk about is the splashes of waterfall water they got while standing right by the massive cliff and the sprinkling water coming from above as if it was raining over them. Check out our INSTAGRAM PAGE for a reel of this cool moment.
While in the area make sure to check out some of the other hikes near by.

]]>Unfortunately the Falls will no longer be open to the public as of August 2022.
We received the following message and we kindly ask you to please refrain from trespassing.
“I represent the new owners of land on which Grassy Creek Falls (Little Switzerland) are located. For decades the prior family allowed day hikers, however, as of August, 2022, they along with the property owners who live along Grassy Creek Falls Road will be posting signage notifying the public that access to the falls is no longer granted. This comes after many years of heavy traffic congestion at peak times, damage to property, trash, noise, etc. and together with the new property owner they regretfully give notice that access to the falls is closed. A few too many bad apples have spoiled it for everyone else. Fortunately, there are plenty of public access falls here in NC, but this one is no longer available to the public. Thank you for your cooperation.”
Grassy Creek Falls is a beautiful waterfall located right in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains and near the small town of Little Switzerland located along the North Carolina Highway 226A.

QUICK OVERVIEW:
Length: 2 Miles
Difficulty: EASY
Time to complete: 1 Hour
Elevation: 597 ft
DIRECTIONS: Milepost 334
If you put Grassy Creek in your GPS you will end up about 5 miles further down the road and away from the trailhead. We recommend punching Grassy Creek Falls Road in your navigation device which will bring you right at the entrance to the trail.

There are several parking spots where hikers can park their car (approximately 10) right as you turn into the road. If you are coming from the Little Switzerland direction the road will be immediately after the tunnel. If you are driving on the Blue Ridge Parkway the road will be right before the tunnel. Please make sure to park in a way that does not block other drivers or the residents that need to get to their homes.

Once parked follow the gravel road which is the trail. The hike is about a mile long straight down the road. It is relatively easy with a steady decline on the way there and incline on the way back.

The trail is on PRIVATE PROPERTY. Please be respectful, do not leave any trace, leash your dog if they are coming along and under no circumstances disturb the residents that have graciously allowing us all to enjoy this beautiful waterfall. Do not drive past the sign that is pictured below as the road is only for resident use and not for Falls visitors.

There are several creek crossing along the way so make sure to wear appropriate footwear. If there has been any rain in the days leading to your visit a part of the path will be pretty muddy.

The trail is pretty well marked and maintained and you will be able to reach the falls without any issues. If there have been heavy storms in the days leading to your visit the possibility of fallen trees along the road is there so a good plan will be to postpone your visit for another day and give time to clear the roads.

Ones you near the Falls there are two ways to get to the waterfall. You can follow the gravel road that kind of loops and brings you to the very bottom of the waterfall from where you can make your way to the top falls. Picture of the bottom of the falls below. This way will require you to scramble on the rocks and around the actual waterfall. If you are doing this be extremely careful especially in the winter as the rocks will be frozen and slippery. We went on a day when it was dry and it hasn’t been raining recently and the sides of the Falls were pretty muddy so plan accordingly.

The easier and faster way to reach the Falls is to take the steep (only a short trek) way down that will be to your right walking on the road where the waterfalls are visible. (picture bellow)

From here you can choose to either enjoy the view from where you are standing or scramble on the rocks and get to the bottom for a different view point of this beautiful waterfall.
If you are feeling adventurous there is a way to get behind the waterfall which is super cool and refreshing in the summer. Again make sure you are wearing appropriate footwear and if you are visiting in the winter keep in mind that it will be slippery and pretty dangerous.
Let us know if you visit and if you enjoyed the falls. We love to hear from you.
If you worked up an appetite after the hike or feel like a refreshment, an ice cream or a drink make sure to stop at the town of Little Switzerland which is actually at a walkable distance from where you parked your car for the trail.
Little Switzerland is located at 3,468 feet above sea level is the narrowest point of the Blue Parkway in North Carolina. It is located directly north of the town of Marion and south of the town of Spruce Pine.
The town was founded by North Carolina Supreme Court Justice Heriot Clarkson in 1909 as a summer retreat in the Blue Ridge Mountain and was given the name because of the picturesque mountain hills that reminded him of the Swiss Alps.

The original Little Switzerland Inn was built in 1960 and the access to it was the only commercial access road to the Blue Ridge Parkway. Today the Inn resembles very much the Swiss style chalet architecture that we are used to seeing in pictures from tourists vacationing there. In fact the winter scene can be easily mistaken for an actual scene from the Alps with the snow covered chalet and skiers wandering the grounds.

You can spend a night or few at the Little Switzerland Inn. The restaurant on site serving breakfast, lunch and dinner offers a great menu which can be found HERE. Enjoy your meal during your stay, after a hike or while driving on the Blue Ridge Parkway. There is an indoor sitting as well as a beautiful outdoor terrace overlooking the Parkway.

After you have enjoyed your delicious meal walk it off with a stroll through the little shops around the village.

If you skip the desert at the Inn but craving something sweet grab an ice cream or pick something to satisfy your sweet tooth at the Swiss Shoppe Ice Cream and Candy Factory shop across the street.

Or visit the Geneva Hall for a variety of events and exhibitions. If you brought a picnic lay a blanket on the greens in front of the Hall or under the trees in the shade next to it and enjoy it while listening to life music and watching the dancers during their Saturday Square Dances events happening in the summer.

Happy Trails!
]]>Before we start here are several things to keep in mind prior to hitting the trail as well as must items to pack in your backpack:
Please make sure to take everything back with you as you are leaving the woods.
Now that we have cleared all of this let’s get to the point. Our list consists of hikes with views, hikes leading to a waterfalls and finally a few adventure towns with broader details on more things to do in and around there so you can spend an entire day at the location.
#1 CROWDERS MOUNTAIN STATE PARK

DISTANCE FROM CHARLOTTE: 36 minutes
We are starting with this particular hike since it is the closest to Charlotte. There are several trails that you can choose from here but the most popular and the one that leads to the summit of the mountain is the Pinnacle Trail.
LENGTH: 4.2 miles
TIME TO COMPLETE: 2 Hours and 30 Minutes
DIFFICULTY: Moderate
The trail begins right at the parking lot past the restrooms. Ample parking is available. You can do the trails two ways. You can turn right where the path splits and take the stairs up or follow the path and take the stairs on your way down. We personally prefer taking the stairs down as it is easier of a hike this way and not as strenuous on your knees. The views from the summit are spectacular however do keep your pets on a leash and kids near by as a drop from the boulders here would be deadly. If rock climbing is something that interests you, Crowders Mountain is a great spot to do that. More information on how to get a rock climbing permit and where to climb can be found on the link HERE.

DISTANCE FROM CHARLOTTE: 1 Hour and 15 Minutes
Next up is South Mountains and why we are choosing it as our number two is because of the proximity to Charlotte and the absolute gorgeousness of the park. This particular spot is a must if you live anywhere in the State of North Carolina and the ultimate day trip spot from Charlotte. There are about a dozen trails to choose from here. From views to waterfalls and everything in between, but the most popular trail in the State Park is the High Shoals Falls Loop Trail.
LENGTH: 2.4 miles
TIME TO COMPLETE: 1 Hour and 30 Minutes
DIFFICULTY: Moderate
This particular trail will lead you passed a handful of beautiful waterfalls up steep stairs and passed tall trees. We suggest you wear comfortable shoes as the trail gets slippery after rain and during the winter months. Recently the park cleared a new trail that connects to the High Shoals Falls Trail called Big Bear Falls and we highly recommend taking the turn and exploring it on your way up to the rest of the falls. If you are into camping this park is the ultimate place to pitch a tent and splash by the river or take on any of the hikes available in the park. For information on hours of operation, pricing and availability check the State Park link HERE.
If you have worked up an appetite after the hike there are a good amount of restaurants to choose from on your way back in the town of Lincolnton, NC.
For a drink check out Woodmill Winery (they have the best sweet wine), Untapped Territory or BrickTree Brewery for a local brew.

DISTANCE FROM CHARLOTTE: 1 Hour and 30 Minutes
Our next hiking suggestion is Stone Mountain State Park. This spot is absolutely spectacular and just like the previous one offers ample hiking trail opportunities with one of the best summit views, waterfalls and so much more. There is not just one favorite trail here so we will tell you about our top three.
LENGTH: 4.5 miles
TIME TO COMPLETE: 2 Hours and 30 Minutes
DIFFICULTY: Moderate
This trail would take you from the parking lot to the summit, down the steep wooden stairs to the homestead and the profile of the Stone Mountain and finally to the falls if you choose to take right where the trails splits 0.3 miles into your trek. We suggest following the trail this way unless you are looking for more strenuous exercise in which case take left where the trail splits and head to the falls first.
LENGTH: 2.5 miles
TIME TO COMPLETE: 1 Hour and 30 Minutes
DIFFICULTY: Moderate
Why we love this trail is because of how little trafficked it is and the amazing views it offers both of the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Stone Mountain profile. In order to take this trail park at the lower parking lot and follow the loop trail from there until you reach the fork where the trail splits. You will see the sign for the Wolf Rock Trail to your right. From this point follow the trail up the mountain before reaching the opening with the views of the Blue Ridge. On your way back from here you will see the opening with the view of Stone Mountain and pass by the old Homestead on your way back to the parking lot. If you choose to extend the hike take right once down the mountain and head to the falls. From there you can decide if you will like to take the loop back to the car or just walk pass the homestead and to the parking lot which would be the shorter option.

LENGTH: 0.2 miles
TIME TO COMPLETE: 15 Minutes
DIFFICULTY: EASY
This one is not really a hike, but more of a walk in the woods to a beautiful waterfall that doubles as a swimming hole in the summer. It is the ultimate beginners hike and the perfect spot to take the kids to on a hot day.
For things to do on your way back from Stone Mountain check out the Town of Elkin. You will not be disappointed by any of the restaurants in town and there are a ton of extremely good wineries to choose from in the area if you are looking to grab a glass of white or red. We loved this area so much that we bought a vacation house and rent out this Elkin Airbnb cottage.

DISTANCE FROM CHARLOTTE: 1Hour and 15 Minutes
Carter Falls is a great beginners hike and one to bring the kids along to. It’s a short but scenic hike with two waterfalls and a handful of cascades.
LENGTH: 1 Mile Roundtrip
TIME TO COMPLETE: 45 Minutes
DIFFICULTY: EASY
There are several ways to reach Carter Falls. You can park at the trailhead parking lot on Martyn Byrd Road and descend from there, begin at the Byrd’s Branch Campground across the street after grabbing a treat at their store and follow the path through the campsite before reaching the trailhead, extend the trek by starting at Grassy Creek Vineyard after a glass of delicious wine, passing through the Enchanted Forest, pass the Forest Bathing Trail and the Cascades Waterfall (most scenic and longest way) or taking the Issac’s Trailhead at 400 E Carter Road in Elkin, NC which would be the longest.
Note that to reach the base of the 50 foot Carter Falls you will have to use go down a steep path. There is a rope to hold on to on your way up and down which would be helpful for the little ones however do keep an eye on them and keep them close by.
Although on other websites the falls are mentioned as a hidden swimming hole there are clear signs along the path warning against that. The site is an old power mill and metal items and remains are still present as you walk the woods so keep an eye on that. They are marked with orange tape and paint for easy spotting.

DISTANCE FROM CHARLOTTE: 1 Hour and 40 Minutes
Pilot Mountain State Park is a must if you are looking for a variety of hiking trails or for an easy lookout that does not require extensive hiking. We have a blog post with a good amount of the trails we have done at the State Park which you can find HERE. Below we would love to share our top three trails that are a must of you are heading this way.
LENGTH: 2.6 Miles
TIME TO COMPLETE: 1 Hour and 30 Minutes
DIFFICULTY: Moderate
This one is our favorite and although it is considered moderate for some, it might seem as strenuous. The trail begins at the Visitor Center and goes all the way up to the top of the mountain and the parking lot at the bottom of the Pinnacle. There is a sign right before the end of the trail that states that this trail feels as if you have climbed a ten story building ten times so take at as you will.
LENGTH: 0.9 Miles
TIME TO COMPLETE: 45 Minutes
DIFFICULTY: EASY
This trail begins at the parking lot and follows the base of the Pinnacle. It is an easy but super pretty trek and it is the perfect hike for beginners and small kids. Beautiful views of the valley are visible from various locations along the way.
LENGTH: 0.2 Miles
TIME TO COMPLETE: 15 Minutes
DIFFICULTY: EASY
This is not necessarily a hike per-se but more of a short walk from the parking lot to the viewing area at the top of the mountain. If you are not looking to get a hike in or are unable for some reason but will still like to enjoy scenic views this trail is for you. It begins at the parking lot and follows a little path that leads to a large boulder from where you will get some of the best views around as well as a view of Pilot Mountain Pinnacle. There are several such lookouts located near the parking lot from which views of the valley are visible on a clear day.
On your way back from Pilot Mountain make sure to make a stop at Divine Llama Vineyard and enjoy a glass of red or white with the Llamas.

DISTANCE FROM CHARLOTTE: 1Hour and 50 Minutes
This spot is another favorite of ours that is the ultimate nature lovers paradise. The summit trail offers spectacular views and there are a handful of waterfalls you can enjoy at this spot.
LENGTH: 2.4 Miles
TIME TO COMPLETE: 1 Hour 15 Minutes
DIFFICULTY: Moderate
This is a must do trail if you like a good exercise that is not strenuous but would still get your heart rate going and rewards you with beautiful views at the end. The hike begins at the parking lot and consist of a steady uphill incline. Watch out for rocks and roots and make sure to check the forecast before heading this way.

LENGTH: 0.8 Miles
TIME TO COMPLETE: 45 Minutes
DIFFICULTY: EASY
This is the most beautiful waterfall in the park. The hike begins off the parking following the path to the left of the Visitors Center. The trek is easy with a slight decline to the bottom of the falls and is great for kids and beginner hikers. Upper Cascade Falls are a great spot to let the kids splash on a hot summer day.
LENGTH: 1.2 Miles
TIME TO COMPLETE: 45 Minutes
DIFFICULTY: EASY
This easy hike is great for all skill levels and will bring you to two waterfalls without much effort. You can choose to do just one or do then both whichever works best for you.
LENGTH: 0.7 Miles
TIME TO COMPLETE: 25 Minutes
DIFFICULTY: EASY
This is one of our favorite swimming holes to cool off in the summer. The hike is pretty easy following the wooden stairs down to the bottom of the falls. Once there you will find a wide pool and a beautiful view of the falls. The Lower Cascade Falls is located outside the main entrance for Hanging Rock State Park.

DISTANCE FROM CHARLOTTE: 1 Hour and 10 Minutes
For some unknown reason this State Park is so little known yet so full of wonderful trails and we’d love to share some of our favorites here with you today.
LENGTH: 2.9 Miles

]]>The town of Elkin, North Carolina was nominated as one of The Coolest Small Towns in America by Budget Travel and it is very easy to see why. This quintessential town located right in the heart of Yadkin Valley Wine Country has so many things to do it would take you weeks to see and do them all.
From mountain views and waterfalls, hiking trails, biking trails, riverside trails, playgrounds, historic sites, small town shops, countless vineyard and wineries, some of the best restaurants in the area, festivals and music venues, fishing, swimming, kayaking, tubing, camping…the list goes on and on and there is literally something for everyone here.
The lineup on things to do in and around Elkin is long and as frequent visitors to the area we’d love to share some of our favorite spots with you. Below you will find ideas on some of the best hiking spots, vineyards, restaurants and activates to do while visiting the area.
We live in Charlotte, NC and Stone Mountain is one of the closest day trips for us. No matter the season we seem to gravitate towards this way and the trails never disappoint. A short hike to the summit or the waterfall, a pretty good exercise taking the 5 mile loop that goes past the Homestead, an easy 2 mile Wolf Rock and Cedar Rock Trail or waterfall sliding at Widows Creek Falls – there is no shortage of hikes you can pick from depending on your hiking abilities and time constrain. We have a full article on Stone Mountain that you can find on our website where we share in length all the details on the trails that you can find here.
Some of the trails start at the Lower Parking Lot and some of them begin at the Upper Parking Lot. The Widow Falls Creek trail has it’s own Parking Lot. Make sure to check our website before hitting the trails to get directions.

This beautiful just over a mile trail is located about 10 minutes from the center of town right by Byrd’s Branch Campground and close to Grassy Creek Vineyard. Remains of what once was a powerhouse that supplied the electricity to the Town of Elkin and the surrounding area are visible along the well maintained path that leads to the Falls. The cascades and the falls are absolutely stunning and the hike itself following the river is peaceful and lovely.
A 240 foot suspension bridge named “The Bridge of Dreams” will be constructed 60 feet above Carter Falls and would be the long awaiting connecter of the Mountain to Sea Trail that goes through the the town of Elkin, passed Stone Mountain and all the way to the coast. If you’d like to be a part of the construction of the Bridge you can make a donation by purchasing and sending in a “ribbon” here. Your dream ribbon would be eventually tied to the finished bridge creating a colorful creation hovering over the Falls. You can also volunteer some of your time and help in the creating of the 20 miles of new trails leading to the Falls the Elkin Valley Trail Association has tirelessly been working on. More information on how to get involved can be found here.
Carter Falls is the ultimate trail for all skill levels. The wooded, flat path is easy for small children and pets and for hikers not looking for a strenuous hike. It offers great reward with little to no effort and is accessible throughout the entire year.
There are several ways to get to the Falls. There is a parking lot for about ten cars at the trailhead of the Falls located at 633 Pleasant Ridge Rd Elkin, NC where you can park and descend to the trail. If the parking lot is busy (which is rare) you can park at the Campground by their office cabin and start the hike from there. That would extend your adventure by less than a mile round trip. If you are looking for a longer hike but still want to incorporate Carter Falls, park your car at Grassy Creek Vineyard and start the trek from there. A parking lot is located behind the Red Barn Tasting Room and a sign that points to the direction of the Falls is easily visible from there. That would extend your hike by about 2 miles round trip.

#3 ELKIN and ALEGHANY RAILTRAIL
This easy and flat 3.3 mile trail begins at the Elkin Municipal Park and tells the story of the East-West NorthEastern N.C. Railroad that extended through here in 1890 coming from Winston-Salem and going to North Wilkesboro and the history of the textile industry at the time.
The path starts at the parking lot by the building and follows the river for some time, passes the dam before heading into the woods. There are stairs visitors can take that lead to the bottom of the dam. Benches are located along the way for rest and multiple large metal gongs can be found to the side of the path. It states that you can make a wish and hit them 3 times (but not more) your wish will come true. It is real fun for little kids.
Signs with pictures of what the area used to look like back in the days can be found along the way and are worth a stop and a read if you want to know more about the fascinating history of the town. The path is used by pedestrians and bikers and 5 extra miles can be added to your trek by taking any of the trails to the side of the main path. Multiple bridges and small cascades would be found along the trails here. This trail is not heavily trafficked but do watch out for mountain bikers.

The first Forest Bathing Trail in North Carolina awaits you just outside town limits. Located on the trail to Carter Falls from Grassy Creek Vineyard this short but quiet and rejuvenating space is carefully designed to create experiences that enhance nature connectedness while boosting the therapeutic and restorative effects of the forest. If you are looking for a nature based wellbeing therapy that promotes positivity, health and mindfulness this trail is for you.
The trail begins at the parking lot behind the Red Barn Tasting Room at Grassy Creek Vineyard. Following the path through the woods you will reach a small picnic area and a creek crossing. Ones you cross the bridge over the creek the trailhead to the Forest Bathing Trail will be to your right. From there follow the path through the woods that weaves through the forest before reaching Klondike Lake. Take it slow and let the forest speak to you. The state of your mind designs the state of your life is what forest bating is all about. On your way back don’t forget to pop in and say Hello to our friends at the Winery and grab a glass of red or white.

We already mentioned Widows Creek Falls once above but we have to give this trail a special notice. We absolutely love visiting the Falls in the summer. It’s our kids first choice every time we ask them what would they like to do today. Of course nothing beats swimming and sliding down a waterfall on a hot summer day so we totally understand the pull.
The trail to the falls is located inside Stone Mountain State Park. The path is almost flat and only .2 miles long which makes it easily accessible to almost everyone. There is a pretty large parking lot and the trek leading to the falls begins right off of it. The trailhead is located to the right just past the lower parking lot at the Park if you are coming from the main entrance. If you follow the GPS you might be directed to the back entrance of the Park. A small section of this road is gravel so make sure to plan accordingly. There are no bathroom facilities right at the trailhead here but you can find some at the parking lot just up the road.
The gorgeous falls consist of a large cascade that drops into a shallow pool and than continues on to a wider cascade that falls into a large pool. Kids love wading at the top pool and sliding down the bottom part. Bring a tube to make it easier for sliding and a picnic. There are several spots to sit in the shade and enjoy a treat.

#6 DOUGHTON PARK and THE BLUE RIDGE PARKWAY
Doughton Park and The Blue Ridge Parkway are less than a half an hour drive from Elkin, North Carolina and offer a wide variety of hikes for every skill level. The Bluff Restaurant and Café located next to the Doughton Park Visitor Center recently reopened it’s doors and is worth the trip any day. Some of our favorite hikes in the Recreation Area are:
Doughton Park is the less traveled part of the Blue Ridge Parkway yet offering absolutely stunning views around every turn. That being said it is the best choice during the busy fall months as most people head towards the Boone and Blowing Rock area crowding the roads there. That leaves you with the opportunity to enjoy the Mountains and the changing leaves without battling the crowds here. If you are heading this way in the winter months make sure to check for closures on the trails. For most part unless there has been severe weather the Parkway is open to drive through but do check ahead of time just to be on the safe side.

There are over 20 Wineries in Elkin and each and every one of them is unique in it’s own way. We have gone to most of them and would love to share few of our favorites and why we love them. Keep in mind most of the time we have kids in tow and they travel with us so one of our first criteria while visiting a place is – is it kid friendly. Every Vineyard in Elkin have proved to be and some are so sweet that they even offer smores and juice boxes for the kids ( Golden Road Vineyards! We appreciate you!
)

#8 SKULL CAMP BREWERY, WINERY and SMOKEHOUSE

#17 GRAB A CUP OF COFFEE AT DIRTY JOE’S
While cruising around town and need a pick me up and possibly a delicious freshly baked pastry check out Dirty Joe’s coffee shop located right downtown Elkin. They recently opened a second location making it convenient for a quick pick up if you are on the go. We love the murals at their downtown shop and the coffee is always fresh and extra tasty.

#22 ANUAL EVENTS, FESTIVALS, CONCERTS
Elkin has so much to offer but some of the best is their annual festivals that have been drawing people for many many years. We have a list with dates on some of our favorites below:
We visit the town of Elkin as a family and like to have space to spread and let our kids run around to run off energy so hotel isn’t ideal. After several visit we have found our favorite little home away from home and would love to share it with you in case you are visiting and need a special place to stay. Why we love this spot is because it is close to town, trails and vineyards yet it feels perfectly secluded. The views from the front lawn of the cows grazing and the sunsets we’ve seen are splendid, the backyard deck feels as if you are at a tree house and having coffee out there in the morning is my favorite thing. A glass of delightful local wine on the front deck while kids play happily at the game room few feet away from us after along day on the trails is a dream and the house is clean ad cozy you can barely believe it’s even real. If you would like to stay at this spot you can book it on Airbnb here.

#23 WINE TOUR COMPANIES IN ELKIN, NC
A great option if you are visiting the town of Elkin and will be doing a wine tour is to call one of the wine tour companies that would come and pick you up within a certain location and bring you to some of the best wineries in town. They are so much fun and would leave you with unforgettable memories to hold on for a long time. Two of our favorites that have picked us up at the cottage while we’ve stayed there without kids are:
Make sure to call and make a reservation way in advance especially during the busy months of the year as they get booked quickly.
For everything Elkin check out the Explore Elkin Website that keeps tabs on all the happenings in town and has a pretty good calendar of events, specials and possible adventures. Make sure to find us on INSTAGRAM to get ideas on trails, restaurants, vineyards and breweries. Happy Trails!

Thanks to the generous donors that wanted to preserve this special spot and The Blue Ridge Parkway Foundations who played a vital role in it’s reopening now you can stop here and grab a hot coffee, yummy breakfast, lunch and delicious dinner.

Located at Milepost 241 on The Blue Ridge Parkway right next to the Doughton Park Visitor Center the construction of the restaurant began in 1948. In 1935 the site was used as a camp for the workers constructing the Blue Ridge Parkway. The plans for the building were put on hold in 1942 due to World War II.
The Bluffs Coffee Shop first opened it’s doors in 1949 and was the first ever dining establishment to provide meals and refreshment on the Blue Ridge Parkway.
After operating for nearly 60 years The Bluffs Restaurant and Café closed it’s doors on November 1, 2010.
For the delight of all of us that have been praying for it’s return and thanks to the over 500 donors to the Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation, including the State of North Carolina and Appalachian Regional Commission the renovation to the interior of the Café began in 2019 and the Restaurant officially reopened it’s doors on August 22, 2020.
The meticulously updated interior consist of retro green checkboard floors, golden chairs lining the bar, retro tables and chairs and the original light fixtures. On the walls visitors can have the pleasure of taking a look back in time through some old and new Blue Ridge Photographs the main one being a large photo of The Bluffs from how it looked when it first opened it’s doors back in 1949.

There is a good variety of delicious breakfast and lunch options on the MENU to choose from and we learned that they have recently obtained an alcohol license and are planning on serving local brews and wine.
Upon being seated on the table you’ll find a placemat on each table that gives great information on the history of the Restaurant and a coloring page for kids on the back of it to keep you and them entertained while waiting on your food.
On this little paper we found the fascinating story of Ellen Woodruff Smith who worked at the Restaurant from the day it opened it’s doors in 1949 until it closed in 2010 That’s over 60 years). Isn’t it fantastic! She was greatly beloved by all the visitors who absolutely loved her warmth and hospitality and loved hearing her say that in all those years she never met a stranger.
We highly suggest you try their Triple Decker Club and the delicious Chicken Salad Sandwich. If you love fried chicken we hear their Classic Fried Chicken is to die for and a must. Their hand cut fries were so delicious that if I had any room left in my belly I would’ve ordered an extra side of them on top of my side.
They do recommend you make a reservation in order ensure a seat. At busy hours and on weekends the wait might exceed an hour. There are covered picnic tables outside however if you do need to wait. You can do so by calling the number bellow.
