The Augsburg Town Hall Reopens
After more than two years of closure, the Augsburg Town Hall is preparing to throw open its doors again. From September 28, 2026, visitors and tourists will be able to return to the building and also gain access to the famous Golden Hall.
The Rathaus had been closed since August 2024 for a particularly complex restoration project. Among the issues uncovered were the presence of asbestos and other materials that required specialized decontamination work. The works also allowed spaces to be brought up to current fire-safety standards. With the reopening, one of the city’s iconic places becomes accessible again.
The Town Hall was designed by Elias Holl; the exterior was built between 1615 and 1620, while the interior spaces were completed in 1624. A building conceived to also showcase the power of a city that at the time stood among Europe’s major commercial and financial centers.
The Rathaus’s history, however, was not linear. The bombings of February 1944 devastated it, and the Golden Hall was almost completely destroyed. In the postwar period, initial provisional solutions were implemented. The full reconstruction of the grand hall began only in 1980 and was completed in 1996.
How to Visit the Augsburg Town Hall and the Golden Hall
The Rathaus is located in the heart of the historic center, on Rathausplatz, a position easy to include in any walking itinerary in Augsburg. The visit can thus be easily paired with the square, the Augustus Fountain, Maximilianstraße, and the other central monuments. The reopening is officially anticipated for Monday, September 28; if up to the reopening only the entrance and a temporary exhibition were accessible, now everything changes and it will finally be possible to rediscover, in its entirety, this splendid monument symbolizing Augsburg in Germany, in the Bavarian region.
The hours have not yet been officially announced, but it seems it will typically open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., including weekends to ensure access for as many visitors as possible. The price, if the pre-closure rate is confirmed, will be 2.50 euros for adults and only 1 euro for students and school-aged youths.
What to See at the Augsburg Town Hall
The principal reason to step through the Rathaus doors is naturally the Golden Hall. Look up to understand the origin of the name: the large coffered ceiling, the wooden elements, the decorations, and the monumental portals turn the space into a blaze of gold, painting, and symbols.
It is a hall designed not merely to astonish, but to convey a precise political message. Augsburg was a Free Imperial City, and its Town Hall was meant to express its prosperity, its autonomy, and its role at the heart of Europe. Paintings, allegorical figures, ancient rulers, and references to imperial power thus build a true celebratory program.
Particularly evocative is the ceiling, today reconstructed. The original ceiling, clad in gold leaf, was even suspended from the roof structure by chains: an ingenious solution that, during the fire that followed the 1944 bombing, contributed to the destruction of the interior spaces. Today the reconstructed structure is anchored to a modern floor slab.
