From October 30, 2026, in time for Halloween and to celebrate the spookiest season of the year with a zombie apocalypse, the eagerly awaited sequel to Apocalypse Z lands on Prime Video. Adapted, like the first, from the novels by Manel Loureiro, this second chapter continues to build a dystopian universe marked by a mysterious pandemic and the survival race that pits everyone against each other.
In the background, almost by contrast, lush and thriving nature and breathtaking landscapes that, frame after frame, continue to astonish and in many ways reassure the viewer: the locations of Apocalypse Z: The New World lie for the most part in a paradisiacal archipelago, much loved by travelers and beyond.
What it’s about
After the events of Apocalypse Z: The Beginning of the End, where the mysterious TSJ virus unleashed a pandemic and effectively marked the end of the world as we have known it, the Canary Islands remained the only place in Europe seemingly immune to the disease and the horror that followed: a kind of refuge for the few survivors. In the film’s second chapter, directed by Carles Torrens, a special mission sets out toward continental Spain to resupply ammunition and other basic necessities.
The group is joined by Roberto (Carlos Alcaide): his motives are, however, decidedly more suspicious than those of the others and threaten to jeopardize the success of the entire mission. As they confront devastated cities, hordes of the infected, unforeseen events and dangers of every kind, the protagonists of Apocalypse Z: The New World are forced to face a more existential question: how far are they willing to go to save what remains of humanity?
Where was the film shot
The locations of Apocalypse Z: The New World are, for narrative reasons, largely different from those of the prequel. Having quickly become Prime Video’s most-watched original film worldwide, the first Apocalypse Z was shot in Vigo and other parts of Galicia. Among the places where the second Apocalypse Z was filmed are mainly the Canaries, as well as mainland Spain.
The Canary Islands
The Canary Islands archipelago, with its imposing nature and still largely pristine environment, could not be anything other than the natural candidate to portray the sole place immune to the virus and its social effects. The decision to shoot in Torrens’s crew was likely reinforced by the extraordinary variety of landscapes that, in recent years, has made the Canaries one of Europe’s favorite destinations for film productions: within a few kilometers you can find white-sand beaches with crystal-clear waters and volcanic-black beaches, cliffs that drop into the sea, and gentler landscapes such as laurel forests, colonial villages, and modern industrial settings.
Locations for Apocalypse Z: The New World were spread across several islands in the archipelago: Tenerife, Gran Canaria, La Palma, to name the main ones.
Continental Spain
As anticipated, the second part of Apocalypse Z was filmed, at least for the scenes involving the special mission in which the protagonists are engaged, also in continental Spain. Details, however, are not known about which areas the production chose as locations.
