A historic hub of wellness in Italy, Abano Terme is one of Europe’s most well-known and valued spa towns. Nestled at the foot of the Euganean Hills in the heart of Veneto, Abano is famed for its thermal mud whose therapeutic properties are recognized even by the National Health Service (SSN).
The Euganean Spas of Abano, Montegrotto, Galzignano, Battaglia and Teolo form the largest spa complex in Europe specialized in mud balneotherapy and thermal treatments, pioneers of natural therapies that trace their roots back to Roman times. The concept of Salus Per Aquam, from which the acronym SPA derives, was born here: therapies that benefit from the natural elements of water and earth, perfectly tolerated by the human body.
More than 100 thermal establishments make up this network of excellence, a pride for all Veneto’s wellness. The numerous hotels, each with its own internal spa center, are specialized in mud therapy and inhalation treatments. In addition to wellness areas there are more than 240 thermal pools indoor and outdoor where you can relax enveloped in the warmth of the water. In the individual thermal centers attached to the Thermae Abano and Montegrotto hotels, thermal medicine is applied to a wide range of pathologies. Several hotels are contracted with the National Health Service (S.S.N.) and offer every type of therapeutic thermal activity, supervised by medical directors and specialized staff.
Here is all the practical information to organize a visit to the SSN-affiliated baths of Abano.
How to reach the Abano thermal baths
The SSN-affiliated thermal facilities are located between Abano Terme and Montegrotto Terme, a few kilometers from Padua, easily reachable by car or public transport. Those arriving by car can exit the A13 Bologna–Padua motorway at the Terme Euganee interchange and continue along the SP16 toward Abano. Those coming from the A4 Milan–Venice motorway can exit at Padova Ovest. For those who prefer the train, the Terme Euganee-Abano-Montegrotto station is on the Padova–Bologna railway line, while Padua station is about 12 km away and is served by local buses about every 20 minutes. From the station you can reach the spa centers on foot or by public transport. Direct suburban buses also depart from Padua and Venice, while within the spa area there is also a local shuttle service.
Days and opening hours of the Abano Baths
SSN-affiliated thermal facilities are generally open from Monday to Saturday, mainly during the morning hours. Specifically:
- The mud balneotherapy sessions are usually available from 5:00 to 12:00, as is the case at facilities such as Hotel Terme Belsoggiorno, which in some cases also offers Sunday morning shifts.
- The inhalation therapies, including aerosols, inhalations, and insufflations, are conducted between about 7:00 and 13:30, as at Terme La Contea. Some establishments guarantee access until 12:00 on Saturdays.
- Wellness-use thermal pools and SPA centers, not affiliated with the SSN but available in the same hotels, may remain open from 8:00 to 20:00, with some facilities extending the hours to 23:30, especially on weekends (e.g., Hotel Terme Eliseo, Aquis, Panta Rhei).
Booking in advance is always recommended, both for the covered treatments and for access to wellness services, especially during busy periods.
Prices and concessions of the Abano Baths
SSN-affiliated thermal therapies are accessible to all Italian citizens with a prescription from their general practitioner. Each citizen is entitled to one annual cycle of thermal treatments, paying only the standard health ticket (which may vary based on income or any exemption). The types of treatments typically included in the agreement are:
- 12 applications of thermal mud with therapeutic bath;
- 12 simple thermal baths;
- 12 inhalation therapies (inhalations and aerosols);
- 12 endotympanic insufflations with inhalation support.
The ticket cost generally ranges from 3 to 55 euros. Some facilities also offer packages for non-stay therapies, particularly advantageous for locals or for those who want to undergo a treatment cycle without overnight stays. In parallel, many facilities also offer private treatments and paid wellness days, with access to thermal pools, SPA facilities and massages.
Treatments and services available at the Abano Baths
Abano’s affiliated spa centers offer therapies of proven efficacy, recognized by the Ministry of Health. The most characteristic treatment is mud balneotherapy, which combines mature thermal mud applications with baths in brine-bromoiodinated water. It is particularly indicated for those suffering from osteoarthritis, rheumatism, muscle pains and disorders of the spine.
The inhalation therapies, on the other hand, help prevent and treat rhinitis, sinusitis, pharyngitis and other respiratory tract conditions. Treatments are always supervised by specialized doctors and tailored to the patient’s needs.
Alongside these, in the most equipped facilities there are programs of hydrokinesitherapy, physiotherapy, motor rehabilitation and aesthetic treatments. There are also sessions of balneotherapy (baths in thermal water, hydromassage showers, vascular training, vascular care), massotherapy (therapeutic and physiotherapeutic massages), experiences in a thermal cave with natural vapors, and routes dedicated to sport and thermal medicine for safe active rehabilitation. Moreover, many facilities offer therapies for the cure of peripheral vascular diseases, treatments in otorhinolaryngology, rheumatology, gynecology, programs of preventive and anti-aging medicine and paths of nutrition and psycho-physical well-being.
The thermal pools are often accessible even to those who do not undergo medical treatments, offering a regenerative experience for body and mind.
Treatments for children
Abano and Montegrotto’s spas are also an ideal destination for families with children. Some spa facilities offer specific treatments for the little ones, particularly inhalation therapies (such as aerosols and inhalations), which are useful for preventing and treating sinusitis, bronchitis, laryngitis and other respiratory tract conditions common in children. These treatments can also be performed with the child in the arms of a parent, in welcoming and dedicated environments. In addition, many facilities offer swimming courses for infants and expectant mothers, thanks to the constant temperature of the thermal pools (about 35°C), ideal for relaxation and psycho-physical well-being.
Family-friendly hotels, affiliated with the SSN, also offer tailored services: family rooms, dedicated menus, play areas, entertainment, babysitting on request, bicycles with child seats and discounts on stays based on age.
Abano Baths, Useful Information
All affiliated facilities provide changing rooms, lockers and on-site medical assistance. Parking is available in almost all spa hotels, and nearby larger facilities also have public parking. Access is guaranteed for people with disabilities, with accessible environments and staff trained to assist.
To access the SSN-covered treatments you must present a medical prescription (the so-called “red prescription”) from your primary care doctor, stating the type of pathology and the recommended treatment. The prescription is valid for 365 days from the date of issue. It is possible to book the treatments directly at the chosen facility, by phone or by presenting at reception.
