Sometimes a small gesture is enough to change the course of a story: a simple message trusted to the sea managed to spark a long-lasting friendship, but between two men living on opposite sides of the globe. This is what happened to Petter Vatn, a Norwegian sailor, and John Tannos, a man from Darwin, Australia. What brought them together was a message in a bottle launched from South America and, after a voyage of more than 14,500 kilometers, arriving on the beach of a small island in the Torres Strait. From that chance discovery grew a friendship that has endured for twenty years.
The bottle that set off from Chile with a message
It was December 2007 when Petter Vatn, a native of Trondheim in Norway, was aboard a cargo ship off the coast of Chile. He held the position of navigation officer, and the sea that day was not particularly benevolent: he faced waves up to ten meters high and temperatures around ten degrees Celsius.
Before returning home for Christmas, he decided to commit a thought to the ocean. He placed a letter inside a bottle and cast it into the sea, wondering where it would end up and hoping that someone might read it. In the letter he told a bit about himself and his work on the vessel, but above all he left a request addressed to the mysterious recipient: he wanted to meet the person who would find that bottle and learn something about the place where they lived.
The discovery after five years
Five years passed before the bottle was found and a response arrived: in 2012, John Tannos was on a fishing trip in the Torres Strait, between Australia and New Guinea. Each afternoon the crew would stop near Aureed Island, a small island covered with sand and palm trees. During a stroll on the island, John spotted something among the debris washed up on the shore: a bottle containing a sheet of paper. He picked it up and discovered the letter Petter had written five years earlier. Remarkably, the letter had crossed the Pacific for more than 14,500 kilometers.
Back home, John decided to search for the sender. The first attempt failed: with the address indicated in the letter, the message came back to the sender. But he did not give up and searched on Facebook for a person named Petter Vatn. Although he found him, for three years the message remained unanswered. Then, in 2015, came the turning point: Petter saw the message and recognized the sailor who had launched a bottle with a note into the sea many years earlier. Petter recounted remembering that gesture, and from there a long-distance friendship began.
The real meeting between the two friends
After getting to know each other through messages and social networks, the two finally decided to meet in person. The occasion came on January 1, 2018, when John was on a cruise in Norway: a deeply emotional moment. John even recalled having nearly missed the ship at the end of the visit, sprinting to the port at the last moment. It was that meeting that transformed a chance tale into a genuine friendship.
They continued to stay in touch for a long time and, almost twenty years after that message entrusted to the sea, in 2026 a new meeting arrived, this time in Darwin, Australia. Petter, engaged in a six-week journey across the country, chose to make a detour specifically to reach John. Together they spent pleasant moments in restaurants, parks, and places to visit, like two old friends reuniting after a long absence.
And to think that it all started with a bottle entrusted to the currents, without knowing where it would land or who would pick it up. It crossed 14,500 kilometers of ocean to reach the shore of a small Australian island and, from there, traveled an even more incredible distance: that between two lives lived on opposite sides of the world, now joined by a friendship that will last forever.
