Safest Cities to Travel in 2027: Italy Makes the List

November 2, 2026

When we set off for a new destination, besides the beauty to discover, the experiences to live, and the attractions we simply must not miss, we also pay careful attention to another factor that can make a difference: safety. Knowing you can stroll the streets calmly, use public transportation, and explore the city’s neighborhoods without particular worries is indeed an essential element to consider when planning a trip.

But which cities are the safest in the world to visit in 2027? The answer comes from the new Safest Cities Report by Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection (BHTP), which identifies the 15 urban destinations deemed the safest by travelers. The research is based on the direct experiences of over 1,500 American travelers, cross-referenced with urban safety indices from Numbeo and The Economist and with GeoSure Global’s assessments, which also analyzes the safety of individual neighborhoods.

There is also good news for Italy: among the destinations crowned as the safest on the planet, one Italian city is listed, gaining positions in the ranking compared to last year.

Montreal is the safest city in the world

It is Montreal, Canada, that secures the top spot in the Safest Cities Report 2027 by BHTP. The city stands out for a particularly low crime rate and for the excellent evaluations its neighborhoods receive on GeoSure Global, where scores above 70 are considered exceptional.

Personal safety, nighttime safety, and access to healthcare facilities also contribute to the result. But there are drawbacks to watch out for, after all no place is perfect. The report indeed highlights traffic: Montreal and its suburbs straddle both banks of the Saint Lawrence River, and crossing the bridges to reach the different parts of the city can become an undertaking.

Venice is (again) the only Italian city in the top 15

Representing Italy in the 2027 ranking is once again Venice, the sole Italian city included in the selection of the world’s safest destinations. With 75.39 points, the lagoon city sits in eighth place, climbing three positions compared to the previous year. According to GeoSure’s assessments, it offers solid safety levels for women and easy access to medical assistance.

The downside? As is the case with many heavily visited tourist destinations, petty crime remains a concern here too, especially in the more crowded areas.

The full ranking

The 2027 standings feature mostly European cities, but there are also Asian, American, and Australian destinations. After Montreal, the podium also includes Zurich, regarded as a quiet city with efficient public transport, and Amsterdam, which receives positive safety ratings. They are followed by Tokyo, particularly valued for personal safety, even at night, and Reykjavik, notable for its compact size and tranquil atmosphere. Other selected destinations include Oslo, Singapore, Sydney, and Honolulu.

Here is the complete ranking of the 15 safest cities in the world to visit in 2027 according to the new report, with their respective scores:
