Sense and Sensibility: Filming Locations of the Jane Austen Adaptation

October 22, 2026

The new film adaptation of Sense and Sensibility, arriving in Italian cinemas on October 22, 2026, promises to recreate on screen those atmospheres so exquisitely English and so exquisitely of times past that have made Jane Austen’s novels so beloved. The choice of locations—as one would expect—has played a decisive role in this sense: between seventeenth‑century aristocratic houses, cottages nestled in the English countryside, semi‑abandoned mansions and places steeped in art and history, this is where Georgia Oakley’s film was shot.

What it’s about

When Mr. Dashwood dies, the estate in Norland Park where he lived with his wife and the three daughters passes by inheritance to the eldest son born from a previous marriage. Elinor (Daisy Edgar-Jones), Marianne (Esme Creed-Miles) and the young Margaret find themselves living with their mother in a modest countryside cottage.

The film, like the novel from which it is adapted, focuses in particular on what happens to the two elder sisters. Elinor, who is more reflective and introverted, forms a bond with the equally shy Edward Ferrars (George MacKay). To win the attentions of Marianne, decidedly more instinctive and passionate in character, are the charming John Willoughby (Frank Dillane) and the Colonel Brandon (Herbert Nordrum).

Where the film was shot

The 2026 film Sense and Sensibility was shot entirely in England in real, inhabited locations capable of conveying that genuineness and spontaneity typical of Austen’s characters and situations. Compared to the famous adaptation with Kate Winslet and Hugh Grant, which this year marks its thirtieth anniversary, Oakley’s version appears visually rougher and more natural, as the location manager described it, precisely thanks to the choice of settings that are more faithful to the period. Regions such as Devon, Dorset, Oxfordshire, Hertfordshire and Kent were the ones most engaged by the shoot.

Norland Park

To represent Norland Park, the house the Dashwood sisters are forced to abandon after their father’s death, Kingston Russell House: a seventeenth‑century manor in Dorset in which Captain Thomas Hardy lived, among others. In the film you can recognize both the sumptuous interiors with fine woods, stucco decorations and hand‑painted Chinese wallpapers and the exteriors, in particular the stone façade in perfect Georgian style.

For external shots of Norland Park, Parnham Park was also used: another property in Dorset that embodies the hallmarks of the English rural estate, and whose walled garden with a pond is worth a visit.

Barton Park
