Allington Castle
Located in Maidstone, in the English county of Kent, Allington Castle traces its origins to the 12th century. The estate was already mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086, the great census commissioned by William the Conqueror to record the kingdom’s properties and resources. Initially conceived as a manor house under William de Warenne, Earl of Surrey, the residence was fortified in the 13th century by Stephen de Pencester, Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports.
One of the most fascinating chapters of its history is linked to the Wyatt family, who in the late 15th century transformed the complex into a manor house. It is precisely in the magnificent Great Hall that Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn dined. This space remains to this day one of the castle’s most evocative areas and can accommodate about 120 guests.
The architecture preserves numerous characteristic features of ancient fortifications: two inner courtyards, a complete moat, an arena once used for bear-baiting, a space for jousting tournaments and the so-called Dogs’ Caves located beneath the castle. The estate also includes a dovecote believed to be among the oldest in England, while the goshawks have found refuge in the towers.
Today Allington Castle remains a private residence, managed by the current owner, Sir Robert Worcester. It is generally closed to the public for most of the year, although from April to October the Kentish Lady company runs boat trips. The complex is also used to celebrate weddings and events, offering the opportunity to discover at least part of the charm of this historic residence.
Price and what the estate includes
The asking price to purchase Allington Castle is 5 million pounds. The property spans about 42 acres of woods and grounds along the Medway River and includes, in addition to the castle, several standalone buildings and structures that could be developed for commercial purposes.
The estate has up to 30 bedrooms, 26 reception rooms and 20 bathrooms. The front part of the castle comprises a kitchen, dining room, drawing room, library, formal rooms and bedrooms, while the medieval wing also houses a professional kitchen. The current owners have preserved the building’s historic features while upgrading the electrical and heating systems.
Among the estate’s outbuildings stands a renovated barn for events, capable of accommodating up to 150 people. There are also nine separate dwellings, usable for hosting family members, guests or staff. Outside you’ll find formal gardens with ornamental fountains, a tennis court, a spacious garage and a large Victorian-style glasshouse. The property even includes an indoor swimming pool, currently out of use.
The estate’s potential extends beyond simply turning it into a private residence. Guided garden tours, filming locations, and income-generating properties already present offer opportunities for development. The riverfront moorings could also be restored for potential commercial use.
