Here are all the dates, useful information and experiences not to miss.
Bolzano Christmas Markets 2026: Useful Information
The opening of the Bolzano Christmas Markets 2026 is anticipated for Thursday, November 26 at 5:00 PM; from that moment until January 6 the stalls will remain open, allowing the celebration of the long-awaited 35th edition that transforms the town into a Christmas village. The magic does not stop at Walther Square.
From November 27 to December 20, 2026, on weekends, Piazza Mazzini will also host its own Christmas market. A chance to explore the city beyond the busiest streets and discover a more intimate atmosphere, among stalls and festive decorations.
Bolzano Christmas Markets 2026: The Events
Not only Christmas shopping and mulled wine: Bolzano has prepared an itinerary that blends tradition, gastronomic experiences, culture and fresh discoveries. Among special events, activities for children and ultra-photogenic settings, here’s what to include in your plan.
The Tree of Wishes and the New Projections on the Cathedral
The most magical moment? The lighting of the large tree in Walther Square, also adorned with creations inspired by works made by children and teens receiving care at hospitals during the ceramic-therapy workshops of the Lene Thun Foundation. Among the 2026 novelties there will also be a captivating light projection on the walls of the Cathedral, designed to highlight its architectural details. Grab your camera: it will be one of the most dramatic vantage points of Bolzano’s Christmas.
Christmas Shopping Among Crafts and Original Gifts
If you love gifts with a story, stroll among the roughly 120 market stalls. You’ll find items in felt and boiled wool, wooden decorations, ceramics, blown glass, carillons, nativity scenes and embroidered tablecloths. The artistic craft route continues in Piazza Duomo and Isarco Street, while in Piazza Municipio you can admire a sculpted nativity scene devoted to the Tyrolean tradition.
Mulled Wine, Strudel and South Tyrolean Specialties to Taste
A visit to the markets without a tasty break? Impossible. Let yourself be won over by strudel, apple fritters, Christmas cookies, speck and local cured meats, perhaps accompanied by a steaming cup of mulled wine. For a toast different from the usual, stop by the Wine Lounge, featuring regional wines, sparkling wines and spirits, or by the Beer Lounge, dedicated to Bolzano and South Tyrolean beers. On December 12 there will also be the national award ceremony for the Christmas Craft Beer – Christmas Beer competition.
Bolzano Mondo Comune and the Solidarity Market
The 2026 Christmas will also have a charitable side. In Piazza del Grano the Solidarity Market will return, where you can purchase items made by local associations. The novelty is Bolzano Mondo Comune, a project that involves participating stalls: for every product sold with the appropriate sticker, one euro will be donated to the Municipality of Bolzano.
Advent in Music, Art Installations and Photo Contests
Bolzano’s Christmas also has its own soundtrack. With Advent in Music, squares, streets and churches in the city center will come alive with concerts, choirs and traditional melodies. If you love art, keep an eye on Angelus Loci, the project that will bring contemporary installations to various city spaces. For content creators, a photography contest dedicated to the most beautiful Christmas shots is coming, with three photos awarded by a panel of experts.
San Nicolò, Krampus and Activities for Children
If you’re visiting Bolzano with family, prepare for a program full of surprises. On Stazione Avenue the little ones can enjoy creative workshops, games, magic shows, storytellers, carousels and the puppet theatre. Also mark December 6 on your calendar, when Saint Nicholas will meet visitors in Walther Square, followed by the arrival of the Krampus, the eerie figures of Alpine folklore. A truly out-of-the-ordinary experience!
Christmas Train, Museums and Vintage Postcards
Want to discover a Bolzano that’s different from the usual? Hop on the electric train that links Walther Square to Gries Square, or participate in Find & Win, the cultural initiative that turns museum visits into a quiz and curiosity challenge. With Auguri in punta di penna, you can write and mail postcards using old ink bottles, just like in the schools of yesteryear.
How to Reach Bolzano’s Christmas Markets
Bolzano’s Christmas Markets are easy to reach by car, but also by train. The station isn’t far from the center and there are plenty of daily connections. Among the 2026 novelties are the historic trains of the Fondazione FS that on dates such as November 29, December 8, December 13 and December 20 operate the Bressanone Express and the Merano Express with possible intermediate stops in Bolzano. Those who prefer the independence of a car will have to take the A22 Brenner motorway, exiting at Bolzano Sud or Bolzano Nord; it’s recommended to leave the car in the fair area to avoid parking stress.
