When autumn arrives, Italy’s forests turn into a precious trove and the white truffle becomes one of the season’s protagonists. In Italy there are numerous places to go in search of this prized product. We have compiled a selection of five destinations where the truffle is an extra motive to set off, but they also deserve a visit for the enchanted autumn landscapes, history and traditions.
Alba in Piedmont (CN)
Alba is one of the emblematic destinations for those who want to experience autumn under the sign of the white truffle. In the heart of the Langhe, this town pairs gastronomy (Alba is a UNESCO Creative City for Gastronomy) with a landscape of gentle hills and vineyards that are particularly evocative with the colors of this season, and a historic center with medieval towers all to discover.
The Alba International White Truffle Fair (from 10 October to 6 December) is another opportunity to discover the capital of the Langhe. The event animates the city with gastronomic, cultural and folkloric appointments.
In Alba, you can also visit the MUDET – museum of the Alba truffle, a space dedicated to the world of the truffle where you can experience it year-round.
Acqualagna in the Marche (PU)
In the heart of the Marche, Acqualagna is a destination to put on the itinerary during the truffle season. Here the International White Truffle Fair takes place (October 25, 31 and November 1, 7, 8, 14 and 15) with tastings, meetings and events.
But the trip, for a weekend of flavors and landscapes in the village in the province of Pesaro-Urbino, can continue with exploring the town center, the autumn foliage of the Apennine territory, the nearby Gola del Furlo State Nature Reserve and the Acqualagna Truffle Museum where you can live a truffle experience.
Gubbio in Umbria (PG)
The truffle also serves as an opportunity to discover Gubbio, one of the most fascinating medieval towns in Umbria. In autumn the “stone city” offers a particularly evocative atmosphere, and the Mostra Mercato del Tartufo Bianco e dei Prodotti Agroalimentari (October 30-31 and November 1, 6, 7, 8) brings the scents and flavors of the territory to the city.
In Gubbio it is worth getting lost among the charming alleys, admiring Piazza Grande and the Palazzo dei Consoli, and visiting the Chiesa di San Francesco and the Roman theatre.
Volterra in Tuscany (PI)
To combine white truffle and culture, Volterra is a destination to include in a travel itinerary. The Tuscan town perched on a tufa hill, famous for its Etruscan and medieval heritage, in autumn hosts Volterragusto (October 24-25 and October 31 and November 1), an event that also includes the White Truffle Market and the typical products of the Upper Val di Cecina.
This is also the opportunity to explore the historic center between Piazza dei Priori, the Romanesque Cathedral, the Medicean Fortress, the Roman Theatre and the surrounding areas made of nature reserves to be enjoyed with the colors of the foliage.
Savigno in Emilia-Romagna (BO)
On the Bologna hills, Savigno, a hamlet of Valsamoggia, celebrates every autumn its most precious product with the International Festival of the White Truffle (on weekends from 24 October to 15 November).
Savigno is a perfect destination for those seeking an autumn weekend to discover a charming village, scenic roads and flavors of the Apennines.
