There is a new historical drama ready to transport audiences to a late 19th-century Warsaw, animated by tormented loves, class jealousy, lavish receptions, and bloody clashes. To recreate the atmosphere of the era as faithfully as possible, the series, adapted from a great classic of Polish literature, “Lalka” by Bolesław Prus, was filmed among elegant aristocratic palaces and broad urban avenues that, during the industrial revolution, marked the ascent of a new bourgeoisie devoted to trade and enterprise.

What it’s about
Stanisław Wokulski (Tomasz Schuchardt) is a man of humble origins but extremely ambitious, who has built his social position from the ground up, passing through poverty, war, and work. When he falls in love with Izabela Łęcka (Sandra Drzymalska), a young woman belonging to a noble family, he is forced to confront the reality that the aristocratic class, in which he is apparently well integrated, actually struggles to consider him one of their own. Izabela’s father, in particular, vehemently opposes the relationship, even as Izabela herself tries to break free from class constraints and clichés and to carve out her own place in society.
Where the series was filmed
To stay faithful to the setting, Netflix’s new period drama was shot entirely in Poland. During the summer of 2025, when filming took place, the sets alternated among cities such as Warsaw, Lublin, Łódź and Wrocław.
Warsaw
In Warsaw, most of the locations for The Doll are on Krakowskie Przedmieście: one of the city’s main thoroughfares connecting the Old Town and the castle. Wiped out by the bombardments of World War II, it was rebuilt in the mid-twentieth century while staying as faithful as possible to its original structure: along the street today you can still admire churches and historic palaces, important public and governmental buildings but also fashionable venues and luxurious boutiques that, speaking of the past, testify to the strong bourgeois development Warsaw experienced at the end of the nineteenth century.
Some scenes were shot near the **Nicolaus Copernicus** monument: a bronze statue paying tribute to the Prussian-born astronomer and his contribution to modern physics.
Lublin
In Lublin, among the places where the series The Doll was filmed, the Old Town stands out: the city’s original core, today protected as a national artistic-cultural heritage. The unmistakable Kraków Gate serves as the imposing Gothic-style entrance—the area’s preserved fragment of the fourteenth-century walls that once protected the city—and retains its role as a tangible reminder of the historic fortifications that shaped the town’s development.
Łódź
In Łódź, the Netflix period drama was primarily filmed at the Karol Poznański Palace: an elegant neo-Renaissance mansion that was once a noble residence and today hosts the rectorate of the Music Academy.
Wrocław
In Wrocław, the historic capital of the southern region of Silesia, the main locations for the series The Doll are Szajnocha Street and Nieborów Palace. The former is an elegant central avenue, flanked by historic mansions and evoking a nineteenth-century atmosphere.
Nieborów Palace is an eighteenth-century residence, designed by one of the most important Baroque architects of Northern Europe: Tylman van Gameren, today used mainly as an exhibition space within a complex that includes, besides the palace, two parks (one in the English style), an orangery, a carriage house, a dependance, and a building for manufacturing.
