To some, they are merely transit points, hurried through with a ticket in hand and the clock ticking too quickly when a connection is about to be missed. For those who love to travel, however, a railway station is already the start of the adventure: the first taste of a city, among grand architectures, tracks crossing each other, and trains ready to depart toward new destinations.
But which are the European stations where travel is best? Answering that question is the new edition of the annual European Railway Station Index 2026 compiled by the Consumer Choice Center, which analyzed 60 of the continent’s busiest railway hubs and evaluated several aspects: from services and accessibility to connections and Wi-Fi, up to train reliability.
The first position in the ranking of the best European stations is held by a Swiss city, while an Italian station also makes the top 20 — though this isn’t the first time.
The Best Train Station in Europe
The top spot in the ranking went to Zürich Hauptbahnhof, the central station of Zurich, which earns 101 points and leaves behind some of the continent’s most important rail hubs.
The Swiss station is particularly appreciated for the efficiency of the national rail system. Switzerland records a punctuality of 94.1% and, in Zurich, the average waiting time indicated by the index is a mere 1.2 minutes, while only 4% of trains are late.
Italian Stations in the Ranking
There are eight Italian stations present in the European Railway Station Index 2026, but the gap between the leader and the others is fairly clear. Rome Termini leads the national chart once again, with 87.5 points placing it at the 12th overall (though it drops one position compared to 2025). Here the average waiting time recorded is 10.33 minutes and the percentage of trains late is 41.2%. A result that allows the capital’s main station to compare with some of Europe’s major hubs and to remain well within the upper portion of the ranking.
It is necessary to go down to 23rd place to find Napoli Centrale, which totals 78 points. The Naples station is therefore the second Italian entry by result, almost ten points behind Rome.
Further back are the others: Firenze Santa Maria Novella and Venezia Santa Lucia are both at the 40th position, with 67.5 points. They are followed by Milano Centrale, at 48th with 63.5 points, and Bologna Centrale, at 51st with 60.5 points. The Italian presence in the ranking closes with Roma Tiburtina, 52nd with 60 points, and Torino Porta Nuova, 53rd with 59.5 points.
The Full Top 20
After the Zurich central station, the podium also includes Gare du Nord in Paris, second with 100.5 points, and Amsterdam Centraal, third with 98.5 points.
Looking at the rest of the ranking, if Switzerland and France shine at the top, Germany records one of the worst performances: 15 of the 30 stations in the lower positions are German, and none makes it into the top 10. The best is Berlin Hbf, in 18th place, with 61.1% of trains late and an average waiting time of 20 minutes. The average delay rate in Germany reaches 49.4%, compared with the European average of 29%.
Among the 2026 novelties are the Polish stations. Kraków Główny is the best among the 10 new entries and takes 9th place with 89.5 points, while Poznań Główny is 13th with 86.5 points. Kraków impresses with its numerous national and international connections and for integration with buses and trams. The country also looks to the future with a plan that foresees 4,700 kilometers of new tracks.
