Those who love travel, adventure, and adrenaline often seek out the world’s most spectacular experiences. There are the famous Tibet suspension bridges, the dizzying walkways of the Himalayas, and the grand suspended footpaths built between mountains and gorges. Yet, to experience something decidedly closer to Italy, you don’t need to venture all the way to Asia.
In the heart of the Swiss Alps, in fact, there is a bridge that seems to have stepped straight out of an adventure film: it is nearly 500 meters long, only 65 centimeters wide, and it spans a gorge at a height of 85 meters. It sits above Randa, in Valais, and offers a suspended path in the void with the Swiss mountains all around.
The Tibetan Suspension Bridge at 85 Metres High
The incredible place we present today is called Charles Kuonen Suspension Bridge and it is one of the most spectacular attractions in the Alps. The structure measures precisely 494 meters in length and reaches up to 85 meters above the Grabengufer gorge at its highest point. The width of the footpath is a mere 65 centimeters: enough to cross it, but decidedly narrow when the panorama of the valley opens beneath your feet.
The structure is built with steel cables and a transparent metal grid, a feature that makes the experience even more adrenaline-pumping: during the walk you can look straight down. Despite its slender, almost suspended-in-midair appearance, the bridge is designed to be stable and its supporting cables have a diameter of 53 millimeters and an overall weight of about 8 tons.
Crossing it takes about ten minutes, but the time can feel much longer for those who suffer from vertigo. From the walkway you get views of the Weisshorn and the mountains of the Mattertal, turning what might simply be a test of courage into a true scenic itinerary. The bridge was opened in 2017 to replace the previous Europabrücke, damaged by a landslide. It is part of Europaweg, the famous high-altitude trail linking Grächen and Zermatt through the Valais mountains.
Where it is located and how to reach it
The Charles Kuonen Suspension Bridge is located in Randa, in the Canton of Valais, Switzerland, not far from Zermatt. The bridge is not directly accessible by car: to reach it you must embark on a mountain hike.
The simplest starting point is the Randa railway station. From there the route follows signs toward the Europahütte and the suspended bridge, winding through larch forests and climbing toward the walkway. From the village the trek typically takes about 2 to 2.5 hours of walking according to official tourist information. For those who prefer an and circular route there is a roughly 8.6-kilometer circuit, with almost 1,000 meters of elevation gain and an estimated duration of about four hours.
Access to the bridge is free, and according to updated tourist information, the structure is normally accessible from May to October. In 2026 the Municipality of Randa notes that the bridge is open, while some stretches of Europaweg are affected by closures and detours: it is therefore important to check the latest trail conditions before setting out.
